Advice needed from the PH massive pls!

I kindly offered to lend one of my motorcycles to a US based friend for the upcoming Malle Mountain rally which is 1500 miles across the alps (Austria/Italy/France/Switzerland/Liechtenstein/Monte-Carlo).

I’ve woefully underestimated the complexities of adding them to my insurance as a non-uk resident. I’ve got the added problem of my insurance provider (Bennetts) claiming I won’t be able to take out a new insurance policy on the bike without cancelling the existing one as it’s apparently illegal to have multiple policies on the same vehicle.

Does anybody know of a specialist insurance company that would insure a non-UK resident on a UK registered motorcyle with European travel cover?

I had almost the exact same issue when a friend of mine visited in 2011. I'm sorry to say I don't think there is an easy answer.

In the end I had to declare that my US friend had been staying with me, at my house, since the policy I had the bike had been taken out.

BeMoto have sorted me out in the past - but its not a normal process as I had a multi bike policy. They did get special permission from the underwriter for it, and it took a little bit of time, but they got it done for me.

But otherwise yes, you will have to set up a policy for that bike only, and then add a rider.

Thanks for the replies. I *may* have answered my own question.

I spoke to a very helpful chap at Knopf Tours based in Germany. They offer a brokerage service for ‘green card’ insurance coverage for most EU countries (it will exclude the original country of vehicle registration). He said US based riders for UK registered bikes travelling in Europe was their most common customer use case.

Will report back once I’ve got it sorted.
