Evening all,

I've recently bought a 2021 Z900 and I'm slowly getting it how I want it, the stock exhaust isn't exactly a looker and my one annoyance with the bike so far is that my heel rests on the heat shield for the exhaust and it feels unnatural. It's tolerable in my Dainese trainers but very apparent when wearing my Sidi boots, it's niggling so need a bit more room.

I've been looking at slip ons for now with a view to maybe doing a full system and tune next summer, I don't want to spend a fortune on an akra/sc/Austin racing so I've been looking at Black Widow, Delkevic, GRMoto, SP Engineering, Lextec and Leo Vince options so far. What is the experience with any of these manufacturers for build quality?

It's a Euro 5 so it would be minimal effect on noise but maybe change the tone a bit, there would be issues with neighbours if I go full system next year and it's obnoxiously loud, next door had a letter from the council for his car...

I had a Leo Vince LV10. Really good fit and quality for the money.

It was quite loud even on a euro 5 otherwise standard bike.

I hate aftermarket slip ons, if you like MAXIMUM noise deafening you, never-ending being heard. It does add dB to your ears which is bad.

I'm not looking for a massive increase in dB, ideally a modest uplift with a bit more depth from a full system, tone and a bit more space for my heel with the interim of just a slip on. The way the sound is deadened for the 2021 Z900 is after the cat and before the exhaust, a slip on would be minimal increase in noise with a touch more depth to the tone.

I fitted a pair of arrow slip ons to my monster - with the original baffles they were quieter than the stock can, so I cut them down slightly to give a little more noise, but it's still nowhere near obnoxious

I had an SP Engineering Ti slip-on on my last KTM1090Adv. A really well made can and sounded good even with the baffle installed.

I’ve fitted Black Widow cans to my snotters before to smarten the back end up and I was pretty impressed by the quality of them for the price.

Like you say though, you’re going to get almost no increase in volume from one on your particular bike, but anything that improves the looks and tone of the standard can is only a good thing.

I know you said you didn’t want the likes of an Akra or Arrow can, but have you checked the owners groups and marketplace for second hand cans? You may find you will pick up a secondhand premium end can for the price of a new less premium one.

I've been looking on eBay, marketplace, owners groups on FB and online, there's more out there for the earlier bikes but the link pipe is different for the newer ones.

The Black Widow ones look ok on the face of it, they also do a lower heat shield that would tidy things up so would probably get one of those regardless. It can be a bit of a mixed brand with the more affordable brands, some fit perfectly and others not so much.

Plenty of more grown-up options out there. They aren’t all 2” ‘GP Stubbies’.

The kind of slip-ons I like at my age have furry linings.

I was out for dinner last night and had a couple of drinks and a large whisky when I got home, in an alcohol based moment of clarity I ordered a Leo Vince LV10 slip on and carbon fibre heat shield, a replacement bracket for my Oxford heated grips and some black paint to do both the bracket and the heel guards as they stick out like a sore thumb. Total spend if about £240 but should clean up the aesthetics of the bike quite nicely.

Another vote for Arrow pipes. Really well made, easy to take out baffle & replace with large circlip. I found it ASBO loud with baffle out, but too quiet with baffle in. The compromise is to drill several more holes in the baffle. As I understand it, most of their range doesn't require an ECU remap & are plug & play....
