My two modern bikes are exempt so this is just a theoretical question.

I've read some bikes need a cat welded in to pass the ULEZ emissions test. What would happen if you had this done, then removed it after the exemption went through and were either stopped or crashed in the ULEZ zone? Would it invalidate insurance? Would there be any consequences if someone poked their nose around?

In theory you might be in bother, in all practical worlds, nothing unless you had a massive accident that required a proper police investigation

Until they start using EDAR units that allegedly will be popping up in various LEZs.

Yes, that’s my worry- they would nab you on emissions.

Surely it would be a fine for excess emissions rather than anything to do with insurance?

From an MOT point of view bikes are not tested for emissions so i'm not sure how it could be monitored

Yes, this…I doubt the insurance would be an issue but a fine every time you used it would be a pain.
