Calimoto no longer free
Discussion
I've used Calimoto for a few years now and it's my go-to for a cheeky ad-hoc blast. I tried the paid version last year and couldn't see a lot of benefit to it really, but now I see they are charging everyone from 3rd July for the majority of features (navigation, tracking & GPX export). It's fair enough as there's clearly a lot of effort gone into that but it still doesn't mean I want to pay for it
I tried 'TomTom Go Ride' (which I assume has nothing to do with actual TomTom) last night and it was okish but insisted on sending me down some nasty little tracks a few times. I just wondered what other people are using? If there's nothing else out there as good I'll probably just suck it up and pay as it's such a useful app.

I tried the Calimoto free version and didn't like it. I found it took me off the beaten path too much.
I think Tom Tom Go is great. The only issue being you don't get street view when planning so have to have another screen with Google maps up.
Speed camera warning is supposed to be the most accurate there is.

Is MyRouteApp any good? I can plot routes in it but not sure how to export to Google Maps - wonder if that's a paid feature? (Apologies as slightly O/T)
I know they've very recently updated it - I thought it was just a 2 week free trial They offer lifetime for £99 quite regularly but I've been caught out with "lifetime updates" from Tomtom before, it turned out Lifetime was one year so I'd never use TT again
I have after not enjoying Cali switched to detecht which for medium twisty is free (ultra twisty is too much most the time)
From seeing others on here been trying that tomtom rider. Trying to work out what one I prefer as tomtom rider medium twisty is inbetween detecht medium to extreme
Finding with detecht medium twisty at times will take you down a very boring long A road since its update
Detecht it much better for saving waypoints, fav spots and sharing though vs others

I've used calimoto for the past 3 years but not renewed this year. It's really handy for tracking a ride and the random ride generator thing is decent.
Lack of proper speed camera notification and traffic is a big negative. They say its too expensive for them to impliment which is fine when they first started out and the app was much cheaper, but now it just feels like an expensive basic satnav.
I just use waze now as most of the time I use a satnav for a to b stuff.

I just go and get lost. I've found some fantastic roads and I'm not constantly checking my handlebars.
My technique also!!I have a Garmin Zumo which is pretty good, but such a faff with the mounting bracket/USB connector. I'm thinking of fitting a small compass just in case....
A couple of weeks ago I set two points. One in the Forest of Bowland and one across the M6 which someone recommended for decent espresso and scones.
I then proceeded to ride silly in-between each.
The second part was particularly great with one road (in sight of the sea I'm the distance) swooping and sweeping- I didn't touch the brakes once on that stretch.

Conversely after ending up in some hideous roads - single track with plenty of gravel and high sides so there's no exit options should a car come flying around the bend or dual carriageways etc I now research my days out - although as my Peaks thread shows, that doesn't always work
