Buy motorcycle private - payment and delivery
Discussion
I sold my FZ6 via this method. I took a deposit then received the rest via bank transfer the day before collection. Collection went ok but the new owner was a bit miffed as it didn't get delivered until 5 days later.
I kept the new owner informed with pics of the bike loaded in the van so he could see I'd kept my end of the bargain. Keys were sent separately by recorded mail.
It all worked out ok in the end.

This is exactly what I wanted to know. So was the bike loaded on and then keys removed and posted to you? I actually assumed keys would go with the bike. I’m using a full insured service so I assume it would be covered from any funny business. 3 k is a lot of money.
How much is the train fare to Shipley? It is on the main BR line and only a fairly small town.
I meant Shiply the website sorry. https://www.shiply.com/3 k is a lot of money.

It worked out fine for us, but do your own due diligence regarding the seller AND your prospective delivery company. My buyer went with the cheapest quote and it was a right clusterf

Bought my R1200RT completely sight unseen.
Chap and I just ‘clicked’ and he showed me (virtually) everything I wanted to know.
Booked a great Shipley courier who was down to the minute timely.
Bike exactly as described, perfectly packed and all keys, docs etc there.
A simple and pleasant experience but I could not say for sure that they all would be.

Bought my TL-R privately recently for £5k and the guy was sound. I left a bank transfer £500 deposit, contacted a courier re: collection & delivery, let the seller know etc… then paid the balance when the courier collected it.
Obviously it is riskier v dealer sale, but normally you can get a good feel about the seller after talking for a bit.
As for keys and paperwork..plus all the original parts (exhausts etc), the courier collected all of this at the same time.

I agree. When you buy and sell things frequently you can get a good feel real quick of when to step away or not. I’m very comfortable with the seller. Just looking for a reputable transport company now Obviously it is riskier v dealer sale, but normally you can get a good feel about the seller after talking for a bit.

Other than the basics of checking for damage, drops and riding it? Just curious why you think it’s so “mad”

Last bike I sold, the buyer was from miles away.
I agreed not to sell it to anyone else until he'd seen it, he borrowed a van, drove over 200 miles at the weekend and paid by online transfer.
His risk of not liking the bike and wasting diesel and a Sunday, I suppose, but I'd sent him about 100 photos by email.
I once drove 100 miles to look at a bike on ebay, drove home, bid on it and when I won, got the train to pick it up.
I don't think I'd buy anything major, used, without seeing it.
I've done daft things like look at boats in Wales, take an airb'n'b overnight and make a tourist weekend of it.
I've taken trains to London to look at bikes and seen they are dogs, it might be a fare wasted, but it means when you see a good one for a few hundred more, you are comfortable paying the extra.

I'm a Dealer I would be very wary using Shiply I had a bad experience where I didn't lose any money but it went wrong and Shiply were utterly useless
IE they didn't have his full name and only had a business address they didn't have a copy of his insurance etc I had to get the Police involved and Shiply were unhelpful to them too
The next time I needed a quote I specifically asked for their ID and Insurance - suddenly no one could do the job !
That said I have used couriers a few times and its been OK bear in mind if you ask the courier to check it out (some will) if you don't buy it they will still want all their money
Personally I only send the money when the Courier has confirmed the bike looks ok and has the V5 but you'd better hope it goes through without a fraud check - I find that payments get delayed approx every 5 purchases
Really its much better to go and view it yourself - particularly at the lower end of the market
I'm constantly amazed that people just send me thousands of pounds on the basis I'll deliver them a bike within a week - its easy to see why internet scammers do so well

I've bought a couple of cheaper bikes unseen on ebay in winter...sometimes it's a good way to get a bargain...just bid accordingly.
I ask the courier to call me when they arrive and can see the bike, at this point I transfer the cash to the seller. Keys and paperwork go with the courier. Quite good fun and less risky than my AIMs stocks gambles.

Bought loads of bikes like this unseen and never had a bad one. Researched first checking other people’s experiences or eBay feed back etc.
I always used a bike courier the Shipley ones can be a bit hit and miss.
Paid via transfer and got the keys when I got the bike.
Helped to have phone calls with the seller to build confidence
Most expensive was a 2014 street triple that I bought in 2015.
