I haven't searched so apologies if I am repeating a previous topic.
Whilst I have always been a fan of the races and kept track of the results this year I have been lucky enough to have a very good friend co presenting a lot of the coverage so have watched all of it. Yet to have a proper catch up but a few messages have completely sold it to me and I determined to get over for the races next year.
I am thinking of a trip over later this summer to get a scope and understand of things whilst getting it all mapped out in my head.
Any recommendations from people that have done this before? Any particular place to stay?
I assume bike security is fairly good with it being on a small island?
Is there any chance to have a decent ride on a sportsbike outside of TT week or is it all 30/40mph limits?

Just back from there this past long weekend - it was great, they reckon its less speed restricted overall the rest of the year compared with the TT fortnight, mountain section is always unlimited but traffic both ways when its not TT fortnight (its one way during the TT). The mountain section is unlimited. Almost unbelievable but it’s true. There are quite a few nice bits to ride outside of TT. Obviously the mountain is unrestricted but 2 way traffic. The road over the Sloc, the A36, is an excellent run, derestricted for almost its entire length from its junction with the A3 near Foxdale to Ballakilpheric.
There is a steady creep of speed limits being introduced here and there which is a drag. I used to pick my kids up from school and totally legally hit 165MPH on the way home in my E60 M5. We had a lovely stretch up to our house and it was great fun to max it out. The best we ever saw was 171 on the HUD. Happy times

I live here mainly because of this joyous freedom.
What Bigmowley said. It's a beautiful island and worth exploring from top to bottom.
Obviously do the Mountain Course a couple of times and the mountain section a few more than that, but the A36 is spectacular. If you are still on it when you see the skid marks on the road then it's probably time to think about easing off!
If you're going that way then may as well go to the Sound Cafe at the Calf of Man (Southern end of the island) and also go to the Point of Ayre (northernmost point), it'll give you a good idea of the geography and "layout" of the island scenically fantastic too. It is very varied within such a small space. Top to bottom is doable in around an hour.
Give yourself some decent margin for error, and assume that someone will be coming up behind you 40mph faster. The derestricted roads are more like good B roads and A roads here in the UK, better tarmac but plenty of undulations, it is not like being on an Autobahn.
Theft. There's not much crime on the island compared with UK.
Accomodation. I got a friend to move there, so can't help much on that one.

Sounds like a great idea to me!
I've only been during TT time but I love the island and very much want to go there outside of TT to experience more of it, as someone said going over for the Southern 100 has to be a good chance to explore the island but still see some racing.
Some of the things on my list to see;
Laxey wheel
Jurby race track/karting
Isle of man motor museum
Manx museum
I took a push bike with me this year and left the car in Liverpool, I found that a nice way to get about, of course it must be great to take a motorbike but as nothing is that far away if your reasonably fit a bicycle does the job.
I imagine if i was without kids I could easily see myself living there!
