Most Miles You've Covered In A Day?
Discussion
I've never tried to cover a huge distance and I stick to A and B roads so mine is approx 350 to Wales, around a bit of it and back. 9am - 7pm with plenty of scenic stops
I was chatting to a lad who said he'd covered 900 on a KTM 990SM coming back through France which whilst I'm not doubting is possible, can't be fun surely ?

There are a few about who are doing Iron Butt rallies which I believe requires over 1,000 miles per day. I seem to recall that one requires over 1,000 miles per day for 10 days!?
My personal longest was from Rupia in Romania back to Hampshire in just over 1 day (2,526Km), It was not fun, is as boring as it sounds but it is nice to think that you can just tootle back home if you fancy it (depending on bike!)

About 900 miles on a GSXR750 riding with a mate on his ZX12 from Grasse in South Of France to Berkshire.
Early morning (near freezing) over the hills to Grenoble then Autoroute at speed with the odd bike swap and home for last orders.
Beaten by two other mates in a van by almost an hour who did motorways whole way (longer but faster at beginning). No beating that thing at a constant 110mph with 500 mile range.
I do remember my borrowed time on that ZX12 though
Thought it was all quite fun at the time!

I have done Ijmuiden in Holland to the far side of the Czech Republic a few times, roughly 650-700 miles depending on route taken.
Dull and boring but not difficult.
Most uncomfortable was a Honda Transalp, sheer hell on the arse after only 300 miles.
Easiest was a Triumph Trophy 900, great tank range so fewer stops, like riding a 80mph sofa and probably could have done another couple of hundred miles without complaint.

Just over 600 miles - Dordogne to Chelmsford in a day on a Honda VF1000F in the company of an FJ1200
I've probably got the other side picture with the FJ1200 hiding the VF1000F

All I remember was it was a long day with several fuel stops and we were trying to catch a specific ferry (so pressing on a bit in the later stages as we'd probably spent too much time at rest stops)
There is no way I would do it now with my K1200RS (it's way more comfortable, has better handling when loaded and has a lovely engine and can pull top gear from really low speeds but the throttle is so damn heavy that my limit is about 100 miles in one hit (before I have to take a break and get my wrist comfortable again - I really should strip it down and see if I can improve it)

Some of the mileages mentioned here are mind blowing to be honest. No way I would have the stamina or concentration to even contemplate a 900 mile day. My limit is about 250 to 300, regardless of type of road. As soon as I feel that sharpness dipping I know it’s time to call it a day as mistakes happen way to easily. I’m obviously just a big girls blouse !

Or just plain sensible. I just can’t see the point of doing ridiculous mileages per day on a bike or in the car, it’s just simply dangerous. There are things such as hotels.
900 miles a day: Newcastle to SE London to Newcastle to SE London. Dropped my sister for a major surgical operation in London and realised that I left something important at home in Newcastle, so had to go back home to pick it and then travelled back to London to stay with my sister for 3 days.
Just over 500 miles on a Suzuki Bandit 600. Bristol - York and back to attend my ex-housemate's 30th birthday party (booze cruise type trip down the river).
Went there with high hopes for the evening (had always liked her), had no luck with the ex-housemate so rode home in the early hours. Pretty unpleasant journey to be fair.

Different roads make a big difference to mileage covered, on two or four wheels I'm comfortable enough to travel for eight or nine hours in a day, but on two wheels it will not be on the motorway. Quieter roads are also a lot less stressful than busy ones, so 10 hours on continental motorways is usually less tiring than 5 hours in the UK.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
