The opening paragraphs made me chuckle a bit, especially as they are quite accurate these days. Biking certainly has lost its coolness, though for those of us who do, it's still a wonderful way to go out and explore just for the hell of it.

I can't read the link as it's behind a paywall but I agree that motorcycling has lost its cool, and it's largely down to people like me. When I was younger the bike was originally my only transport then, once I had 4 wheels, it was still "any excuse to get the bike out". Nowadays, I look at the sky and if there's one cloud I'll maybe hesitate, if there are lots of clouds I'll write it off, and if it's too sunny I'll consider how awkward it is carrying all your crap around and wearing a jacket/armoured jeans in the sun. I realise I've become the cliche that I used to despise as a young'un but there you go. We get older.

The whole article stinks of middle class, I bet the guy does not even have a bike licence.
What an ahole. Quite a bit of projection going on there, every group of bikes is a gang announcing their arrival and being threatening? Righty. As for the change to electric bikes, I’ve currently got 4 bikes that range from 1985 to 2014. I’ve no intention of selling any of them.
Noise is a big part of the experience for me, I’ll be riding petrol powered bikes until I can’t buy petrol anymore.
Electric cars are popular because of low running costs and accessible performance, plus gizmos.
Putting those attributes into bikes I don’t need lower running costs, I don’t want more performance and I don’t care about gizmos.

This should work without the paywall

The guy that wrote that is a complete tt. Still, it is the FT so to be expected.

I found that a bit of an irritating read. It was full of dubious stereotypes and clichés. Also a significant assumption as to why people ride bikes and that the "biker gang" image is a key part of it. I'm not big on making a racket and I know I'm not alone in that. Even the people that I know who like their bikes noisy try to arrive and leave without making a fuss. On the whole, the article was rather condescending.
Oh dear... not exactly well written or original... That article reads like it could have been written by one of the PH Biker Banter crowd, that goes off on "arseless chaps and bank managers" every time they see the word, "Harley".
As for the presumed editorial slant, no, I don't think electric motorcycles are the future... I wish "journalists" would stop being so bloody lazy and actually research and write properly.

I don’t think a lot of bikers are “cool” either, not nowadays.
Even my mum and dad who are old duffers have remarked that whenever they’re out they notice that bikers appear to be fat, balding old blokes who “sit around drinking mugs of tea”.
I’ve had bikes for over 20 years and can confirm that I’ve never even been slightly cool in that time. Or before that time really. the only time I feel cool on my bike is when I've made the wrong decision on what to wear that day

I wasn’t going to comment but it sounds like the guy went to Box Hill and got annoyed there were a few bikes there.
I thought exactly the same -“ I went to one of the oldest, most famous, biggest bike meet spots in the country and found the bikes very distracting”. Not sure what the point of the article was: Speed addicted said:

I've had bikes for over 50 years and can confirm that I've been absolutely b4stard frozen and soaked many times, but never thought I was 'cool'.I now have a maxi-scooter (following a diet of GSXR, Fireblade, Firestorm, multiple GSes) so am apparently even less 'cool'. I'm probably a lukewarm pensioner at best
