Newish petrol station recently opened up close to my home so with it being the perfect day for going out for a run on my bike I decided to fill up at the said station before heading off. Park my bike, see that there is an option to pay at pump so proceed to take my gloves off and get my wallet out to scan my card when an attendent walking out of the shop asks me to remove my helmet -thought for a second about telling him I was paying at the pump but decided sod it, got back on my bike and fill up elsewhere. Is this the norm now? Can sort of understand being asked to remove the helmet if you’re actually going into the shop to pay but being asked to do so when it’s pay at the pump seems frankly ridiculous. Rant over.

It was becoming the norm until Covid turned up.

Not been asked to remove my helmet yet, since.

Just start coughing and pull your mirrored visor down hehe

Oh, pay at pump, well then it's ridiculous.

I always pay at pump and have never been asked to remove my helmet, not at Tesco or Sainsbury's.

There was a discussion about this in the friendly dumb questions thread. I wonder if it’s a new directive as I’ve never had a problem just lifting the visor.

I’d go somewhere else too.

Saw this the other day, biker looking nonplussed as he couldn’t get the fuel to deliver and girl repeatedly telling him to take his helmet off over the tannoy.

It is to do with getting faces on cctv to clamp down on criminals stealing bikes, it gives the opportunity to find whoever nicked your bikes and where people simply move on to garages that allow them to avoid cctv the police can then focus on those.

It can also help prove it wasn’t you when you report your bike stolen after it has been seen used in a petrol station for fuel theft.

Are you saying police trawl petrol station cctv for stolen bikes as routine?

Scammed card etc used to pay. I'd say they just want your face on CCTV.

Apologies if this is a silly question but would it not have been easier to remove your helmet rather than go fill up somewhere else (and especially if the next place had also insisted that you remove your helmet?"

I wear glasses and taking my off then putting it on again helmet is a PITA.

Its also annoying finding somewhere safe to stow the helmet whilst filling up then having to carry it in to the shop juggling cash and gloves where theres often no counter space to set your stuff down.

If a garage insists on this then I leave and find a place thats not so picky, my choice.

I’ve found that places that have employees - eg Morrisons etc will have some woman telling you to take your helmet off. Stick with the stereotypical Asian run petrol station and you won’t run into this type of rubbish; they’ve got a business to run and will know that helmets make no difference and nor does some stupid rule. Consequently I don’t fill up where I reckon I’m likely to get asked to take it off. It’s a totally unnecessary pain in the arse.

Lol at the stolen bikes comment above.

Don’t know why anyone wouldn’t take it off tbh 1) it’s good to get a bit of air and 2) it’s just polite

If you are paying at the pump doesn't it self authorise? I'd just ignore them and continue filling up.

Shell statement on their stations policy re helmets:

“In some areas of the country, local police have made a request for motorcyclists to remove their helmets whilst refuelling and making payments. In these areas we are supporting local police with this request and will ask that all motorcyclists remove helmets.”

Seems like total nonsense with regards to pay at pump considering there are unmanned stations you can buy fuel from.

I'm not sure what they would be hoping to achieve.

Really?
I stop my bike, stick my card in the reader, enter my pin, fill up, leave. Where exactly is the impoliteness involved if I keep a helmet on?
I'm disrespecting the pump?

I’ve never understood the issue with this. I hate wearing the lid when I’m not actually riding the bike. First thing I do when I stop for anything is lid off.

Always taken it off when filling up, just hook it securely over the end of the bars, always felt pretty secure there. It takes all sorts and I’m clearly in a minority, but even as a glasses wearer I don’t understand 10/20 seconds removing a helmet to be an issue.

Unless I’m a hurry, I’d just pay in the shop under those circumstances, but I’d need to remove both gloves, earplugs, etc, etc, then find somewhere to safely rest all my kit on the counter, hopefully not upsetting any displays whilst in the process, and it’d take a fair while to kit back up. Maybe I’d even take the opportunity to buy a few groceries too.

Pay at the pump means that there’s no chance of filling up then doing a runner without paying, but it still leaves the garage exposed to credit card fraud.

If someone pulled up in a car and tried to pay at the pump with a balaclava on, would you be surprised if the garage asked them to take the balaclava off?
