There are some great deals on the 2023 790 Duke at the moment. Free QS. 3.9% APR Purchase Plan or a 4.9% APR personal contract purchase (PCP) deals.

I just think at the moment, made in China doesn’t quite sit well. I already know the answer. Pay the premium for the 890 which is ‘made’ in Austria.

What do we know about production at this China. facility? Is it just assembly, with all parts shipped to China? I’m thinking the big items are the frame, LC8 engine, dash, ECU. Or is it full production?

Or is it the case that say engine components were always made in the far east, and just assembled in Austria?

I’m thinking less so the Governments attitude towards human rights. Somewhat shipping a bike half way round the world. Not exactly promoting the green agenda. And primarily QC issues. KTM’s don’t have the best reputation as it is.

Not really, seeing as they have about a million people in concentration camps. You are allowed to choose who you do business with.

Anyway. A thread on the KTM forum that discusses VIN decoding notes that most parts are made at one of several Bajaj Auto plants in India. Bajaj now having a 49% share in KTM. Then assume these parts are shipped to Austria for assembly. Now China?

It's my understanding that the free quickshifter and 3.9% APR for the HP Purchase Plan and 4.9% APR PCP offer on the 2023 A2 compatible Duke 790 expired on Sunday 16 April 2023. I was tempted, the Chinese connection didn't put me off. Some dealers had new Duke 890s for <£8K so they were also vying for my attention. I think the 790/890 Dukes are fantastic looking bikes.

I'd be more likely to buy a KTM if they got a company to underwrite an extended KTM warranty or KTM start offering a 4 year warranty on CF Moto built KTMs.

I quite like the look of the CF Moto 700 (Kwak ER6/Z650 motor) CLX in heritage form. They're styled by Kiska, the same people that design KTMs.

I think I am more concerned with what our own Govt. and 'institutions' are doing than what's going on in China.

From the KTM site

  • Terms and conditions apply. KTM Finance offers are valid until 30.06.23, while stocks last, at participating dealers.
The date of the 16th may have been the QS?

Thanks PT1984. I'd not seen that. I was mistaken. Just as well I didn't pressurise myself into doing a deal over the weekend to get the offer.

In current times that finance deal is something. All the other brands are at least twice that.

Meh.
China or Austria, they've never managed to match the jap stuff for build quality and reliability.
The end user ends up as KTMs quality control department in my experiences with them.
Exciting they might be, but quality they ain't

Lots of well known motorcycle brands (and car and truck brands) have tie ups with Chinese manufacturers, or simply own the brand. They are the best at what they do and help western companies make a profit.

I know people who had the smaller CC KTMs and they had serious quality issues but then so did the bigger bikes, as has been said they are not the best quality was and never have been.

Chinese-Chinese bikes are cheap and nasty but Chinese-Western bikes are actually pretty good, in comparison.

If you are worried about the green footprint then buy an electric bike or walk.

Quality control isn’t a factor for Chinese built bikes,it’s a factor for KTM.

They set the standards and implement the controls,it’s their fault not the Chinese. If QC has the same standards across all factories then KTM need to up their game in certain regions.

Where are these deals?

My wife was 'made' in HK so I've no issue.

OP, I think I may've parroted your line mooting whether KTM will offer a 4 year warranty on their CF Moto built bikes if CF Moto give a four year warranty.

If you go on the 790 page it gives the purchase plan deal at 3.9%.

This will be my first big bike after passing my DAS which I have now started. Theory passed. It will also be a treat after the most serious of operations. I wanted something ready and waiting in the garage.

Strangely I find the Dukes desirable machines. Something I don’t feel about the new Hornet. I just do not want to regret it. The build quality and reliability of my little CB125R has been rock solid. Thai built FYI!

Probably not for the Biker Banter thread but I genuinely try to buy nothing from China for a whole bunch of reasons beyond their quality control issues. I know everyone will say "Stu but everything you buy has Chinese components" but if I consciously know I wont have it.
Somewhere down the line KTM as will loads of other manufacturers realise even just screwing your bits together in China is not a great idea. They are doing it for short term profit nothing more.

There you go I've had my rant

^^^ This

Although history tends to show that items built in certain factories / regions are better than others
