Oh no what have I done?

Over the weekend I got carried away on a well-known auction site and got the winning bid on a Honda ST1300 Pan European.

I'm not sure I have a really wanted one but it seemed like a bargain and it's on its way to my place.

It is a 2011 model which I believe has ABS.

It looks like it needs a bit of attention so I will sort it out give it a try and either keep it or sell it on.

Any hot tips from current and former owners gratefully received.

My IAM observer had one and probably still does (I got sick of going). He could ride it remarkably quickly for such a behemoth.

Loved my 1100. Wore an Aerostich Roadcrafter Hi-viz yellow suit on it for commuting and it was like the parting of the Red Sea. hehe

I always liked the 1100 and had a number of rides on them. Big and heavy but surprisingly capable (for the time). I never tried the 1300 and was "scared off" by the reports of speed wobbles that were seen as being responsible for the death of 2 or 3 bike plod. I know the bike had to be loaded and travelling at a fair rate of knots to risk the wobbles but it was sold as a "sports tourer", so isn't that exactly what it's supposed to be good at?

Owned one (ST-1300) for about 6 years. Took it on Europe trips, including the Nurburgring. Great bike, subject to some limitations.

Mine had an aerodynamic instability which set in around 105mph and made the front feel very light (although I had the top box on most of the time, so that is fast with a top box). Some oddball stuff, like fuel consumption on the trip computer is measured in miles per litre. It looks stupid if you don't keep the side panniers on. By modern standards it is a bit dated with no cruise control.

But it really is a comfortable long distance bike. Very comfortable 3-position seat. You can ride 16 hours in a day, not feel sore, not feel tired and do it all again the next day. Outstanding headlights even if they are halogen.

I have one currently. Big, heavy, comfortable. Engine heat is too much for me in the summer months, but great in the winter!

My one has required quite a bit of TLC and maintenance, but it's an old bike so I was expecting that. The brake system is particularly complex though and needs careful servicing. It's a good bike, just be careful of the weight to begin with if you haven't previously owned something of a similar size.

Hmm... would this be a red one with a little scottish flag on the number plate going as "Lot#33932"? If so I know the chap who bounced that down the road at a fair pace a while back - it was his winter hack so definitely worth giving it a good clean up and check over.

Otherwise all the Honda 'Pans' are much of a much-ness really; heavy, generally reliable, low cost mile munchers - theres a reason so many get used for winter commuting duties. Personal thoughts are that they are just a bit boring to ride as bar 'making progress speed wobbles' they generally have little character or uniqueness to them.

I have a 1300 for commuting duty. It's great - comfortable and fast enough with good storage and visible to traffic, the moveable screen is pretty good keeping the weather off at motorway speeds as well.

It doesn't set the world alight, but for what i use mine for i can't think of a better hack. I will admit it's pretty heavy when manoeuvring, and you need to think about where you're parking it. From experience, a slight downhill slope to the left and it becomes impossible to pick up off the side stand!
