Le Mans can be mental for camping, it’s generally ‘boisterous’ but can get well out of hand. At Moto GP last year, (admittedly a massive crowd after covid) it got out of hand! Think of Mad Max scenes all night, bikes being nicked and burned in a massive bonfire, even next morning, nutjobs everywhere. We were surprised to find out bike untouched tbh, but cannily hid it ‘ in plane sight’ in amongst a row of posher bikes! I should say mates camped and our official parking was in the campsite by main entrance so we saw a lot of carnage!
Moto GP was a bit of a blow out, maybe, but French are really into their endurance racing so who knows!
We stayed about an hour north of lemans and rode in each day. It was easy riding and good fun each day, locals for miles and miles come out in the villages to watch all the bikers and egg them on! In this little village about 30 miles north, some old lady came out of a shop onto a crossing, all the bikes stopped for her, she shuffled accross (she was like 80!), got half way, turned and faced us and gave this big ‘rev’ gesture! Hahaha, her face was a picture of sheer joy as about 30 bikers all obliged, to much cheering from those outside cafes etc! Loved it!
Bike is best way in and out, police just ignore the cars and wave all the bikers through. On a Uk bike, we properly took the piss, any side of the road, pavements, over a roundabout itself in one case, the cops just ignore it! We were out and on our way so quick after the meeting. In a car we’d have been several hours, like 20 mins on bike.
Watching wise, get a grandstand if available the public areas get busy and claimed early. It’s not the best circuit to watch from but it’s not bad. We watched Moto GP on the last corner, saw all the action, nearly all the crashes, Dixon, Mir, pecco, loads of them!
But be careful on the camp sites!
