Throw some ideas at me
Discussion
Hiya
I’ve been without a bike for a year due to doing up a house and therefore not having a garage. I’m at a loss as to where to go next. I’ve had:
- Speed triple
- Multistrada 1200
- SV650
- Duke 790
- GSXR 750 (did not like)
- Tiger 800
I’m not sure what to get next. Budget is £5k-£7.5k. What’s out there to consider?? I’ve got a trip from Leeds to Glasgow coming up in April, but other duties will be a city centre commute and general blatting about..!

The Multistrada, Duke and Tiger suggest you like an upright bike, which which are also good for long trips and urban roads.
The newer Tigers look good, a colleague recently bought a 950 and loves it.
KTM SMT for something a little different
Tenere 1200 would probably feel a bit heavy and underpowered compared to the Multistrada, the 700 could be worth a look but not convinced it's a motorway cruiser.
Africa Twin

I think you’re right that I favour something up right. I’m not sure about the more top heavy items. I think I’m in either sport touring, naked or the hyper strada/MV tourismo sectror. The newer Tigers look good, a colleague recently bought a 950 and loves it.

I’ll be going out and testing a fair few before buying but I’m not sure really where to start looking
I have a 2017 VFR800 which was similar to the budget. My concerns would be...
1/ Blatting. I don't find it particularly fun for this, but to be fair I have other blatting options so it may suffer by comparison.
2/ Commuting if year round. The build quality is pretty poor. I saw a lot that looked tired even at 5 years old. Mine is OK but takes more effort than other bikes to keep that way.

KTM 1290 for an absolute hoot. Any of them, R, GT or even the Adventure are great fun and make a journey a joy.
Hayabusa/ZZR1400/H2 SX - everybody should have one before they die. The concept of a low, sleek, fast missile of a bike is very enjoyable.
Can't think of anything else I'd want for the road in UK/EU.

Hyperstrada is a hoot and very agile whilst remaining practical, I came back to one after. Multi in the middle ....
If looking new the Desert X looks like a laugh
This is really interesting. What made you go back to the hyper after the multi? How tall are you if you don’t mind?If looking new the Desert X looks like a laugh

Go to the nearest big independent and sit on a few
It quickly becomes obvious what you like - then go and have a google
However IMO: if you're doing longer distances I'd suggest a KTM 1090 I'm looking for one myself, if you're doing shorter distances a KTM 990 SM or SM/T if you want to go ballistic 1290 GT but they're fugly

@ekulluke I'm 5'8 so don't listen to the bitter northern ex trackdayer above ... he struggles now he cannot get out from his husbands thumb ...
Back to your question, I had a Gen 1 Multi, then an 821 Hyperstrada on PCP, then got seduced by the new ( 2018 as it was) Multi and picked one of them up, but for my use it was less useful than the Hyper as it was way less fun on the A/B roads and too wide cumbersome for my regular trips into London, was no more comfy than the Hyper for my missus and so I binned it off and picked up one of the last Hyperstrada 939's, popped another top box on it and we are good to go .... night and day a better bike for my needs and will do big mikes almost as comfortably as the Multi ....
