I have a KTM 690 SMC R, shortly due an MOT.
I like being squeaky clean, so I did the usual number plate mod & got rid of the OE tail piece & plate light. I since fitted an LED cheapo Amazon bolt LED, which is now toast after 3 months....
Any recommendations for a decent item? Either M8 bolt light or maybe something self adhesive??

I presume you know it's an MOT pass with an advisory (although most don't even bother advising)

Isn't no number plate light now a fail, as of a couple of years back ?

Mine just passed

He mentioned if it's a separate light it's ok, if it's part of a multi light unit it's a fail

I've got an R&G LED number plate light on my Monster, been on for 10 years without problem, Ducati V-twins tend to shake bulbs apart on a regular basis (my 916 gets through a bulb every year or so).

You can fit it with or without the cover depending on the size you want, it's quite bright but a little less if you fit the cover.

It is 2 bolts rather than a single though.

Yep & it's very rare to get pulled for it. I hardly ride in the dark - I just like stuff being correct.

Appreciate the offer, but having measured up, the space between the tail light & number plate, there's not enough space.....
I'll look for a decent bolt LED - luckily they seem to be sold in pairs, so I might get a bit more than 3 months!!

Stacks up to when I last had my LC tested, I'd fitted a clear lens and a red bulb, but the inbuilt number plate light then didn't illuminate the plate.

My NC30 has no number plate light, just a little extra reflector on the plate, passes every year. It is a very old bike so probably different rules.

Looks like the manual says that if there are multiple no. plate lamps and some are not working but at least one is on, then that's a "minor".

If all are out, that's a "major".

Defect Category
A rear registration plate lamp or light source missing or inoperative:
(i) when rear registration plate has 2 or more lamps or light sources minor
(ii) when rear registration plate has only one lamp or all lamps not working major

Having read what you've copied, I re-read the link I pasted (which is what my MOT man is obviously referring to)

I think you're right, that it should have failed

It just isn't as clearly written on the original page

True. It's formatted incorrectly on the government web page. The "minor" and "major" are not lined up with the "reasons for failure".

Anything LED from Amazon is going to crap. I base this on buying many LED floodlights for the business and most have already failed. Look for better quality items like Ring (also budget but want their rep intact) or reputable companies which you can go back to. Amazon; most sellers dissappear after a year anyway.

Quick update: I bought these off Amazon. Delivered today - expensive, but appear to be really well made. Luckily I'm quite handy with a soldering iron

For the benefit of others, they are a fraction of the price for the same product on eBay

I've been using them for years, I didn't suggest them as you said you didn't want cheap LEDs
