R1 5vy 2006 - what am I doing?
Discussion
I have always thought one shouldn't try and relive ones youth.
Yet for some reason I kept getting drawn back to the advert for this 2006 50th anniversary R1 in Kenny Roberts speed block yellow. I had one brand new back in the day and always regretted selling it 5 years later.
So I've decided that money is no use in the bank and I've bitten the bullet. This bike has only 5000 miles on it and has been sitting in somebody's living room apparently. It has now been recommissioned serviced MOT'd and new tyres and is being delivered to me tomorrow.
I'm not sure how often I will use it. Sparingly and only in dry weather I expect.
Whether it will live up to my memories of my original bike I don't know but I'm looking forward to its arrival.

Good for you, and why not. That looks ace.
If I had the space to garage another ‘bike, I’d almost certainly be having an early R1 next to my MT-09 as a second ‘bike to take out on shorter rides.
I like to think I could manage riding a sportsbike all day, but when I try I’m paggered after a couple of hours, whereas I can be out on the MT all day with no issues.
I’ve got a friend with an original ‘98 R1 in red and white with the red seat. If he ever sells it, I’m having it. I’ll find somewhere to garage that!

Just prey the magnets don't become unattached from the generator housing. For some reason Yamaha decided to run it in engine oil and when the generator fails, magnetic grinding paste goes all around the engine.
Thanks for the tip off. I knew nothing about this but just googled it and see a replacement part can be fitted to avoid the problem. I'll look into it more and see if I can DIY.fred bloggs said:

Running the stator in the engine oil isn't that unusual and neither are the magnets working loose. SV1000s are prone to it. People seem happy re-sticking them with J-B weld. Those 5VY are great bikes and who doesn't like Yam sppedblock yellow?
Yamaha knew the stator flywheel was a crap after a few years and could destroy engines, so quietly updated it and didnt issue a service bulletin. At least from my research. They also charged £500 for the replacement. If thats too much, you can find them online from fabrication companies for less than half what Yamaha want.
I swapped mine out, cost about £200, although it seems you can get even cheaper ones now. Was happy to see the old one was fine, but I'd rather be cautious.
Great bike though I didn't have mine long. Bought it for £1k after not being started in 8 years. Fixed it up and sold it on for over £3.5k. They hold value well.

They are brilliant bikes. That one looks a cracker.
I've had my 50th anniversary for just over 8 years and is sitting just under 29k although it hasn't been out as much in the last few years. Took it from the North of Scotland to Poland and back and it was great.
A blown fork seal has put mine off the road at the moment so I've decided to go right through the bike and fix anything that needs doing.
I need to decide whether to just to do the mechanicals and ride it or carry out a minor restoration (plastics have a few marks, some metal work could go a tidy up etc etc).

I’ve got the 60th Anniversary R1 in that colour scheme. I originally bought it new on PCP and when it was 3 I had to settle the finance.
I speculatively asked the salesman who’d sold it to me what he could do for me on another new one and surprisingly he said “my boss would kill me for saying this and losing a sale - do NOT sell that bike”. So I settled the finance.
He was right - they still fetch crazy strong money, and god knows what the 50th 5VY bikes fetch.

Oh god look what you've started. I'm now viewing 60th anniversary bikes to go with the 50th one!!!I speculatively asked the salesman who’d sold it to me what he could do for me on another new one and surprisingly he said “my boss would kill me for saying this and losing a sale - do NOT sell that bike”. There seems to be loads of white/red 2016 60th anniversary bikes with 0 miles. I guess pre reg and speculatively stored? Not many yellow ones though.
It's my 60th birthday this year so great excuse to add a 60th anniversary yellow bike to go with the 5VY.

White/red? Those aren’t 60th bikes - the proper 2016 bikes are the same black/yellow speedblock design, gold wheels, factory Akra exhaust. There seems to be loads of white/red 2016 60th anniversary bikes with 0 miles. I guess pre reg and speculatively stored? Not many yellow ones though.

Mine, in front of a Huey.

You're correct, my mistake, the white red ones are 60th anniversary of GP racing editions apparently.Mine, in front of a Huey.
Damn that yellow bike looks good. Now searching 2016 bikes. Might have to buy one. In fact it's feeling inevitable.
Only thing is I'm even less likely to use the 2006 bike if I get a 60th anniversary model too.
It's arrived and tucked under a cover in my barn until summer I guess.
Absolutely love it. Cant believe how clean it is but then it was living in the previous owners house for many years. It's only done a couple of hundred miles a year for the last decade.
Not a great photo and I really should sweep up those leaves.
