Another one of those posts sorry.

Getting the itch for something different and looking at old R1s.

I'm 6 foot 1, would it be comfortable. It's rare I do really long rides, 2 hours tops.

I've never ridden a full faired sportsbike either so new all round for me.

Currently ride a 2001 speed triple.

Thanks

Would consider a gsxr1000 k1/k2/k3/k4, seem to remember it being really comfortable (same height) and had plenty of poke.

This will help.

Everyone is different but you won’t find many people describing one as comfortable.

The most comfortable sports bike I’ve been on was the original s1000rr. It felt like a cruiser compared to the k4 gsxr 750 I had at the time.

Comfort for me seems more dependent on hip/knee angle than reach to the bars.

Max of 2 hours you can probably ride anything especially with a coffee/petrol stop in the middle. The 2004 R1 was quite comfortable for me but I only borrowed it, wasn’t mine so rides were short, I’m 6’2”.

Never seen that before, thanks.

I’m currently trying to work out what will fit me and it’s very helpful to be able to input a known bike that feels ok and then compare it to the numbers for others I’m thinking about.

I had a 5PW R1 which was fine & I’m an inch taller than you. Though I’ve never sat on a 5VY, it wouldn’t surprise me if they shrunk it a little.

I’ve got an L0 750 at the moment which feels like a sports tourer (compared to the P7F ZX6R I had before), but it does have clip-ons and rearsets, so I wouldn’t imagine an older GSXR1000 feeling too small.

I was around 6foot when I owned one from new. I knew others who were taller and none of us had a problem, although we were a lot more flexible nearly 20 years ago. They’re a bigger bike than modern sports bikes, so a lot more roomy, but also a fair bit heavier too. You’ll fit on easily, but the biggest challenge will be sitting on it correctly so you don’t get the achey wrists that many complain about. They get them because more often than not they ride bolt upright with nearly or completely locked arms pushing their whole upper body weight down through their wrists.

That could be quite a challenge for someone used to upright naked bike riding.

Thanks all for the responses. That comparison website is very useful.

At 38 and carrying a lot of rugby injuries, particularly wrist I may need a test ride before I get too impulsive hehe

Bought a 2004 5vy new for my 50th. At the time I was 6'3 16 stone. Road and track use. Fantastic bike, no comfort issues, did lots of long rides. I remember reading that some chap did a round the world tour on one.

It is a very analogue bike, no rider aids; don't think it even had ABS, but I am sure you will do you own research.

Nick Sanders.

He seems to do it every 10 years or so.

I’ve had a few R1s as has Mrs DS - a 2000, a 2008 and currently a 1999 and a 2016 (so oldest and newest shape).

I’m 6’3” with a long leg fitting and Mrs DS is 6’2” with very long legs (37” inside leg).

I’ve never had issues with R1s (or others I’ve owned including a RRS Fireblade or a 2014 MV Augusta F4). All have been used repeatedly for big euro trips and also trackdays.

The original 4XV R1 is actually supremely comfortable and quite spacious. Mrs DS loves hers as it’s so comfy and one of the only bikes outside of adventure bikes that is comfy with her legs. The latest R1 feels comparatively small and light but is still good for me - the only issue is that the seat itself gets incredibly painful on my arse.

I wouldn’t worry about it.

I think he first did it on a Triumph Daytona 750/900. It used to be on display where I worked as the company was a sponsor.

It was pretty shagged.

Thank you for the further replies.
Feedback seems positive for sizing. Time to do some proper shopping.

I had a 5VY, wasn't especially comfortable for me at 5'8" but the family friend I bought it off said it was comfy He's in his 50's, 6'2" and did 20k miles on it in 5 years.

I had a '98 R1 and am 6ft. It was surprisingly comfy out of town, more so than most sports bikes.

A decent amount of room and the seat is good for longer trips too.

Have you considered a zx9r e/f. Ok there tenths slower around a circuit. But apparently out do the compilation on real roads and in the comfort department.
