All 20 places now allocated - Trip full

An early "heads up" for those on the PistonHeads BB site.

The details of the 2023 trip are now finalised and booking for the trip has started. In 2023 we will visit Italy, and more specifically the lakes and the Dolomites.

The dates for the trip are Saturday 17th June to Sunday 25th June, giving us 2 days to get to Italy and 2 days to get back, with 6 days to enjoy the wonderful roads with many well-known passes including Stelvio, Gavia, Tonale, St. Gotthard, Simplon and Furka to name but a few within easy reach.

Schedule for the trip is:

Option
Evening of Friday 16th June 2023 - Cross the Channel - Eurotunnel

- 1 night in Ibis Bethune Centre Gare, Bethune, France
https://all.accor.com/hotel/B8Q0/index.en.shtml

or
Morning of Saturday 17th June 2023 - Cross the Channel - Eurotunnel

then

- 1 night in Hotel Florimont, Saint-Ferréol, France
www.hotelflorimont.com/en/hotel.html

- 3 nights in Hotel Rosa, Baveno on the shore of Lake Maggiore.
www. hotelrosabaveno.it/?lang=en

- 3 nights in Hotel Lady Maria, Fondo in the Dolomites.
www.ladymariahotel.com/en/

- 1 night in Hotel Arcis, Gomaringen, Germany
www.hotel-arcis.de/en/

Evening of Sunday 25th June 2023 - Cross the Channel - Eurotunnel

There are also other options to cross to mainland Europe and ride to either the stop-over hotels or direct to the hotels in Italy

The numbers this year will be fixed to the 20 spaces reserved at both of the main hotels in Italy. Those spaces will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so booking early if you want to join us is recommended.

The total cost for the 8 nights in the hotels, single use rooms, parking included, B&B (half board in Fondo) is £775 (based on current GBP/Euro exchange rates). Channel crossing costs will be additional to this and will likely take the costs to around £1,000. Likewise, a hotel stay on the Friday night will be additional and likely in the region of £75 - £85.

If you'd like to join in but would prefer some alternative "there and back" options, then those can be discussed.

Booking will require a £250, non-refundable deposit. This will be allocated towards the costs of your trip when you attend but will not be refundable if you drop out before the trip. As ever, I don’t make any profit on the Old Gits trips so the money you pay reflects the direct costs of your trip.

If you have any questions or would like more details, then please let me know.

Images from previous Old Gits trips to the Dolomites so you get an idea as to what to expect! wink

For those who don't know how the Old Gits trips work here's a very quick overview.

This is not a guided trip

We definitely do not all ride in a line at the speed of the slowest rider, with "road captains" to hold up and ps off the rest of the traffic. Instead, the hotels are pre-booked so you know where you're heading and know there will be good company who speak your language and share your interest, but how you get there, what speed you ride, who you ride with etc. is entirely up to you.

We deliberately stay at locations for a few nights, so you get the opportunity to explore the stunning roads on a bike unincumbered with luggage.

You only pay the costs associated with your trip. You are not subsidising anyone else's trip. You share in the group discounts that are available. All of the coordination and booking is done on a voluntary basis.

Getting altitude sickness prevents me from enjoying trips like this sadly.

Damn! I’d love to do this but my riding simply isn’t upto that level yet.
Came back after a long break and just haven’t used the bike.

That’s a great price for such an amazing trip.

If I can get some miles in next year I may well come on the 2024 one please.

Have fun! thumbup

Plenty of time between now and June to get your riding up to scratch but I can't do anything to make the Alps/Dolomites any lower! wink

Now up to 18 people on the trip. At the moment, BMW is 8 - 6 up on Kawasaki for the greatest number of bikes on the trip so perhaps we need two more Kawaskis!!! wobble - Any and all bikes welcome!

Do you get AMS at such low altitudes, that's very rare. I got it at 4700m in India and spent a day recovering at 3500m before going back up, but most of the alpine roads are less than 2000m so not normally an issue. The hotel David mentioned is at 980m apparently.

The highest road we're likely to drive on is Stelvio at 2,757m, and there aren't that many roads we'll be able to ride over 2,500m

A great feature of MyRoutApp mapping is the ability to get the altitude read out of any given route so planning around a specific ceiling us pretty easy. (Providing that ceiling isn't something like 1000m!)

When I first cycled in the Alps in Summer I remember strenuously exercising and feeling light headed but most of those trails are <2500miles.

At 2000m and not breathing hard your laughing (in the beautiful clean air).

The Garmin Zumo XT also has a nice altitude function so you can see a little graphic of the altitude of approaching roads, could then choose to avoid those.
