Helmet fogging

I have two helmets, both AGV K5. One is effectively my summer helmet and the other a winter helmet (saves me swapping out visors all the time). Different paint jobs but effectively the same helmet.

The winter helmet is running the OEM AGV clear visor with Pinlock pins and a genuine clear Pinlock insert. The summer helmet is running an OEM tinted visor with Pinlock pins and a geniune clear Pinlock insert. The Pinlocks are fitted as best I can, and the screw pins twisted to ensure the correct mating of the Pinlock silicone seal to the inside of the visor. When static, everything works as intended.

The problem I have is that when riding the Pinlock insert always drops down away from the visor on the bottom. No amount of adjustment will keep it sitting in contact with the visor, rendering it useless. I don't know if it's the shape or angle of the K5 visor but it's never worked properly. It's driving me mad.

It's time for a new helmet as these are a few years old, and I want to solve this issue for good. I'm not sold on the Pinlock inserts based on my experience above. I'm looking for recommendations or solutions. The F1 boys actually use a double layered (double glazed?) visor in their top-end helmets which prevents the fogging. Exactly the same principle as the Pinlock by introducing an insulated air layer to prevent condensation forming, but permanently built into the visor rather than being stick/held in place by pins.

Does something like this exist for motorcycle helmets?

Failing that, does anyone have a helmet/visor/Pinlock combination that doesn't 'drop' out of place the moment you start riding?

Thanks
Iain

I've got a K5-SV too. My standard clear visor has a Pinlock insert but I thought it just 'clicks' into the pins on each side? Can't say I've ever had a problem but has one of the raised bits that the Pinlock attaches to on each end broken?

I've got an iridium visor which isn't genuine ASV therefore doesn't take a PInlock but usually use that on bright summer days so fogging isn't an issue, and I leave it cracked open a little anyway.

The pinlock pins are eccentric, so the tension on the pinlock insert can be adjusted by turning the micro screw each side:

Never bloody works for me though, it always drops away from making contact with the visor

How old are the pinlocks ? The seals degrade over time, so they may need replacing. Do you have a local helmet dealer you could ask for advice ?

Use RainX on the inside of the visor.

I often wonder why Fog City insert went out of favour? Can you still get them?

For those that haven't seen them they were a lot like a pinlock but instead of the silicon seal they actually glued onto the inside of the visor. Always a bit nervous sticking them on as you only got one go but once stuck and sealed they were good for quite a while (until they got scratched up and you had to replace them but generally you'd get about half visor life out of them).

I'd rather have a Fog City than pinlock but if the visor has the pinlock posts you have no choice. Also I can only find Fog Citys on Amazon and Ebay, which suggests they're old stock and may not fit modern visors. If I recall correctly there used to be two types - Arai and non-Arai, because of the Arai visor vents. Now you'd need more types due to differing visors sizes, shapes etc.

The pinlocks do wear over time - as mentioned above, the pin each side is eccentric, so you turn it with some pliers and it increases the pressure on the insert pushing it more firmly against the visor. It makes a big difference to how well it seals, basically if the pins aren't turned right, it won't seal.

NB: the little cut out on the ends of the insert weaken over time, which has the same effect as the pins not being adjusted right and the seals slacken off.

Pinlock inserts in general are extremely effective. There's something wrong with yours if a bit of wind pressure is affecting it to the point it comes away from the visor.

I have a Bell lid with their version of Pinlock. Visor is factory sealed double glazing - why don't all lid makers do this?

My K5 does the same. I have a standard visor with Pinlock - useless and a tinted visor without pinlock. Both steam up despite my best efforts with various products and changing the vent openings.

Might not help but my K6 was a bh to fit the pinlock to, once fitted it's been spot on.

I'd echo replacing the pinlock.

Couldn't you seal the pinlock with clear silicone around the edge ?

Not ideal but worth a try on an older visor

Well I’ve tried the clear silicone route

Actually harder than it sounds to make it look neat and not smear it everywhere. Seems to be setting nicely and although not perfect, will hopefully get me through the winter.

We have fogcity adhesive inserts in our helmets.

Takes a bit of prep to fit but still perfect after about a year and never fogs up.

Just got finished at work attempted warp speed down the A1 home but between the mist and fogging it was like watching a Vaseline smeared VHS of a speed run
