I failed my Mod 1 for the second time this morning. On both occasions I started the test well and then ballsed it up right at the end.

The first time, I closed the throttle too early and failed to reach 50kph for the emergency stop. I got a second attempt at it, but closed the throttle too early again. I found bearing down on the cones whilst accelerating very unnerving and backed off way too early as a result. Safe to say I worked on it a lot since and it's much less of a concern now!

Fast forward to today and I felt fairly relaxed; I was a bag of nerves first time round! I managed to reach the target speed for the emergency stop and hazard avoidance sections. However, I also managed to clip the inside cone with the edge of my left foot when swerving for the hazard avoidance part right at the very end of the test.

Just wanted to vent a bit really! I'm pissed off with myself for making such a stupid error, particularly as I felt it had been going so well up until that point.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! My instructor had previously reiterated about looking at where you want the bike to go rather than fixating on the inside cone, and whilst I don't remember specifically, I suspect that's where I went wrong today.

I failed mod 1 (in 2010) for the same slow speed.

Don't overthink it. You'll be fine next time, have some chocolate before it to get chilled out a bit more

If it's any consolation, I failed my 2nd driving test literally 20 feet from the end of it by driving on the wrong side of the entrance to the test centre as another student was coming out. Total brain fart.

Remember on a bike to look between the cones. Object fixation is a weird and wonderful thing, unless you're looking to pass a test!

I'll be posting in a few months how I've done exactly the same so don't worry!

You’ll nail it next time.

Look on the bright side aswell, Mod 2 is easier than Mod 1!

getting through the speed trap is an odd one, it was raining for my mod 1 so i was a little hesitant but i still felt like i did it at a plenty good enough speed, but no I was told not quick enough and to try again, the second time I wanted to make sure it wasn't in doubt so really went for it (or so I thought) but actually only just scraped it by 1-2kph!

A real shame on the swerve, you'd done the tricky manoeuvres by that point!

I'm sure you'll get it next time, on the bright side its hopeless weather for actually riding at the moment! So keep working away at it and as long as your ready for Spring all is good

I failed Mod 1 at least once for a similar reason. I found it hard to gauge speed in a car park. It felt like I was going much faster than I was. Combined with a bit of performance anxiety and I fked it up.

All the low speed manoeuvres I was fine with, but I'm not a fan of the Mod 1 on the whole as it's in such an artificial environment.

I've been moping around feeling sorry for myself all afternoon, but it's encouraging to read all the responses!

Booked in again for next Friday. I just hope the weather is as good as it was today!

I can relate to the speed thing. 50kph is only about 32mph. And yet this is the part that has caught me out on both occasions and now causes me the most anxiety!

Obviously the idea is to replicate a situation on the road where you have to swerve to avoid a hazard. I find myself having to fight my instincts to keep accelerating towards the "hazard" during the test! It's got a lot easier with practice but it feels like an unnatural thing to do. That's my excuse, anyway!

Best of luck and I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Failed my Mod 1 twice, both times on the u-turn, was livid the second time, I just told the examiner to let me out. Went home frustrated and just practised like mad in a quiet car park with markers on my 125cc after that.

3rd go I got the u-turn bang on with room to spare, however it was pissing down on the day and I was really apprehensive on the speed trap and just hit the limit on the second go through it, 1st go I was 2 mph under so examiner gave me another chance, was so relieved when he said you've passed.

Mod 2 passed first go, I found that so much easier...

Don't give up, you'll nail it next time, just try and get the speed up round the corner then aim for the cones and look through them not at them...

According to google bananas calm nerves. Two should do it, placebo or not it go me through resits smile

I stalled on a roundabout mod 2 and restarted without foot down, I was surprisingly calm after that as I assumed I had failed.

As others have said. It's easily done, I scrapped through my Mod 1 (my speed was exactly 50kph both times - talk about by the skin of my teeth!) and, like others, I found the Mod 2 weirdly relaxing.
Anyway, best of luck for the next go!

Sat my Mod1 at the start of January 2020, the rain was absolutely bouncing down and they were talking about canceling it, they decided to go ahead, by that time i was soaked through and pissed off, didn't care about the test just wanted to get home, showered and dried, i blitzed the lot in five minutes and passed. So i think the not caring mindset did me a favor.

Mod 2 two weeks later was a shambles, i dropped the bike at a pot holed junction, bars turned, decided to go, clutch out, stalled and down it went, i was absolutely raging, examiner got out his car (yes he was in a car), the test was aborted there and then, he took the radio off me and left me there (waited 40 minutes in the freezing cold) for the instructor to come and get me, if i hadn't spent so much money up to that point (about a grand) i'd have chucked the whole thing.

Second Mod 2 on the 6th Feb 2020 i passed, nearly three years on i love it, so stick with it, you will get there in the end, can't say i enjoyed the whole learning/test process but it was worth doing and i'm glad i did it.

I passed first time with one minor for my emergency stop being a little longer than it should have been, but to be fair I was so conscious of not being fast enough out of it that I was close to 50mph rather than kph!

MOD2 is much easier though if you've got some riding experience under your belt as it is much more natural.

Follow the advice about target fixation the chaps above have stated, check your speedo just as you exit the seep on the emergency stop to check you;re within parameters and you'll crack it 3rd time though!

Feel your pain on the hazard cone.......did exactly the same thing on my first try. As others have said, don't stare at it and you'll cruise past without fuss.

I was so cross with myself, took a gamble and re-booked my Mod 1 and also my Mod 2 for immediately (30 minutes) afterwards. If I'd cocked up Mod 1, the Mod 2 was obviously not going to happen but the incentive worked for me!

Best of luck!

I failed mine years ago, pre the expensive and DAT or whatever it was the gov tried to force on everyone to stop people riding days and have had no interest whatsoever in doing it again, riding on the road was a very short term thing for me, I would never do it now. So really I am thankful.

Don't beat yourself up too much and give another go. Your instructor is right, look where you want to go. If you look at the cone the chance is you will hit that cone.

Look at it this way you want to be safe when you get out there so don't over think it.

Just listen to what is being said by your instructor and trust what he says.

Don't over think it just do what is told.
