I'm looking at buying my dad an optimiser for his Honda Forza 350. He seems to think it has a lithium battery fitted as standard which I find bizarre.

Firstly does anyone know if this is the case? It's a 22 plate scooter.

Secondly, can a standard optimiser be used on these or do you have to go with a specific model? I've looked around online and can't see a lot.

A quick search indicates that they do have a lithium battery.
I don’t think normal battery optimisers are suitable for lithium, optimate sell specific models for lithium batteries.

You can use a normal charger, but it's not ideal for maintaining the longevity of the battery.

Oxford do a Lithium capable charger Here. Good quality battery charger and lithium friendly so should last for years. My earlier Oximiser has revived a fair few batteries from useless to eeking another year or so out of them. Keeping it maintained should let it crack on for years.

I have read that it is better to have a lithium specific battery charger for lithium batteries.
But I don’t believe bike charging systems are designed to work differently depending on the type of battery.
Wonder why that is.

Optimate and Ctek are popular brands, and they both do chargers that will charge both types of battery. The tech has moved on now and the best chargers auto detect what they are charging and use the relevant mode.

I highly rate NOCO stuff, even the basic 'Genius 1' does 5v, 12v AGM, 12V Lithium, and deep recover/forced mode. Much better than any oxford crap as it actually lasts!

When I accidentally flattened the battery on my '22 GS, I checked and that has a lithium battery, so I went to Halfords who had a suitable charger for not much money. So far it's been great. £34 iirc.

ETA: similar to this, a few quid more now https://www.halfords.com/motoring/battery-maintena...
