Going to buy either a Hideout or a Scott Leathers waterproof textile jacket.

https://www.scottleathers.co.uk/

I happened to be in Barnard Castle recently and went to the Scott workshop. Their gear looks a lot better in real life than their website.

I wonder if anyone has an opinion on laminated waterproofing vs a waterproof membrane?

Hideout is available with laminated waterproofing, so in theory water should bead off. I have no direct experience of if this works or not. Scott leathers has a membrane so the outer of the jacket gets soaked and you get cold. I have experience of this type of jacket and you do stay dry but a long ride in the rain is not particularly comfortable.

No experience of either of those although they are both quality brands. However go for a laminated suit/jacket if you can afford it as they are much more comfortable, warmer and dry out quicker. I have a Dainese laminated suit which is all day comfy, warm down to single digit degrees and dry. I would like to look at made to measure next time so may well take a visit to Hideout who are sort of local.

I wear Scott leathers daily with work where I cover a lot of miles in their made to measure kit, the leather trousers and leather summer gloves are excellent and some of the best I’ve ever experienced.

The textile jacket I have and the winter gloves leave a lot to be desired, I don’t doubt the safety credentials but find the jacket to be generally pretty uncomfortable and cumbersome and not that water resistant. (Though we do spec a jacket that can have zip on and off outer jackets to switch from summer to winter mode - this may not be what the general public would buy)

The winter gloves are pathetic and are at most suitable for walking the dog, I wouldn’t ride a motorcycle in them and they are not remotely waterproof.

If you can get to Barnard Castle have a good chat with Jim about exactly what you want and I’m sure they will be able to make something to your tastes.

I personally wouldn’t be spending my own money on Scott textiles (but I’d buy the leathers) when from experience main brand off the shelf items seem to be warmer, more comfortable and with better weather protection. Though it has to be said main brand textile jackets do feel a bit less protective than my Scott kit but that’s probably subjective

Just ordered a Hideout textile jacket and trousers. I’ve been measured, got to go back for a second fitting half way through. It’s about 10-12 weeks in all I’ve been told. It’s a lot of money but I’ve never found any bike gear that properly fits me and decided to treat myself. Can’t wait especially with all this rain

I mentioned recently on another thread that I’m very impressed with my custom Hideout textile suit. It’s very comfortable, warm with the linings in, feels protective and high quality. It’s been good on the few occasions I’ve been out in rain. I’ve probably done 12000 miles in it now, and nothing’s broken.

BKS do custom textile suits as well. They look, and feel, pretty bulletproof

No idea about Scott, but I'd always say laminated rather than membrane; like you say you shouldn't get as cold, and it shouldn't take as long to dry out. And (if it's a removable membrane layer) no faffing around and deciding whether to put it in or not.

I have a Hideout suit and I love it. I did have some niggles with a small leak initially but Kate was excellent about resolving it. I always think, sometimes things go wrong with stuff (sh*t happens), but the way someone handles it is so important and she's been great. I think mine's 3 years old now and done a fair few miles including a Scotland road trip, a few Wales road trips, and various other things. It's quite heavy in comparison to my OH's Dane, but it does have L2 armour and the Kevlar layer. Being custom I also specified a few bits and pieces, like "key / earplug pockets" on the arms.

Good to know. I must admit I was cautious, it's an awful lot of money to invest in a Jacket and Trousers and I'm no millionaire. The service seems to be great though and like you i've specified some extra pockets etc for carrying pass cards etc to my carpark at work. My insurance is due on my bikes at the end of the month and I'm going to make sure the equipment cover is bumped up to cover the cost should I end up bumping down the road in it.

I have experience of both companies. I tried to get a Scott made to measure leather suite made a long time ago - about 9 or 10 years ago. The cut was terrible to say the least, the trousers were baggy, the jacket was a size too big and a very odd shape, all in all a disaster that I tried to resolve - the suit went back a couple of times but eventually I asked for and received a refund. I think this was around the time one of the leather cutters had left, or had a long holiday - something along those lines apparently.

Then I went to Hideout and was measured for a leather suit, went back for a fitting and adjustments and then received the finished suit and was over the moon with it, exceptionally good quality, fitted perfectly and it was very comfortable. It wasn't cheap but was exceptionally good value.

I don't have any experience of Hideout textiles but having experienced the quality and professionalism Kate offers I have no doubt you'd get a first class suit and the fit would be excellent and it would do exactly what she says it will.
