Talk to me about tank bags
Discussion
How safe are they, I always mentally think the magnetic ones will fall off and the strap around the headstock will jam the steering so ive never brought one.Am I being daft?
Just need something to put a disk /u lock in,and I dont fancy faffing around with a tailbag due to the poor design of my bike.

I've always used the SW Motech ones with the tank filler ring attachment. Handy for keeping allsorts in, phones on charge, wallet etc and has a handy waterproof cover should the heavens open...
Works very well, robust and never fallen off. Only downside is it's a slight faff when you're filling up but nothing to get too upset about.
I still have mine so when the new bike arrives, the appropriate tank ring will be ordered and off we go again.....

I rate the Baglux Bagster tank covers and clip in bag - not cheap so can be best to find some of it secondhand, but very good.
The tank cover is also very handy at keeping matt finish tanks free of scratches and keeps the bike a little more discrete, less attention seeking.
Yeah but they look terrible The tank cover is also very handy at keeping matt finish tanks free of scratches and keeps the bike a little more discrete, less attention seeking.

Much bigger piece of luggage. If the OP just wants a handy cubby then a GIVI or Motec tank ring ones are best. Had the Baglux Bagster on a Fireblade once. Used it once and binned it. Too big, got in the way and not pretty! The tank cover is also very handy at keeping matt finish tanks free of scratches and keeps the bike a little more discrete, less attention seeking.
Any of the tank lock ones are a good bet , ive used Givi bags for a few years now…, I even fitted a 3L one to the H2 in end as the bit of extra space it gives is really handy.
I still have two magnetic bags , must have bought those late 90s, never gave any problem, moved about or scratched the tank on many bikes and tours but I was concious about cleaning both the tank and bag . The magnets are incredibly strong.
The other half had a baglux system and again, I couldnt fault that…no luggage on bikes is pleasing to the eye IMHO so you may as well use what suits you best.

And your point is? They may look terrible but the tank is protected, the bag fits securely, the bags can be a decent size and they can be taken off when you don't want them.
IMHO magnetic ones scratch the paint and filler ring mounted ones are too small. Baglux is by far the best solution.
Haven't used magnetic bags, always thought it was an accident waiting to happen, and as the camera is usually in there if I'm on holiday, then it needs to be secure. Have/had Baglux Bagster and Givi tanklock systems, like both. The Bagster system is "better", you'll worry less about weight and it's easier to get the bag on and off; my Givi bag has the tanklock and a headstock strap so a bit more fiddly to get on and off, but with practice it's 20s longer than the Bagster (so 22s total ).
Been using Touratech strap-on (!!!???) for years and now I have changed bike it is the one thing I really really miss but it won't fit the new bike.
It was the Touratech 'Touring'. Fits odds and sods in for work, puncture repair stuff, microfibre towel to clean visor and is expandable if necessary.
It is nowhere near to fouling the steering so no worries there.

If you do opt for a magnetic bag, don't use it without the headstock strap.
If you do, the first time you get to 70mph it will lift slightly at the front, then suddenly release and hit you in the face on the way past. It will land on the road and be squished by a passing HGV. This will do your flask and sarnies no good at all.
Ask me how I found this out...
