I though I would share this story in the hope that it can help anyone else avoiding doing the same thing!

Going to work one afternoon, with a fresh brand new tyre (Bridgestone s22) I managed 3 corners before having a bit of an off.

I was turning right at a junction and gave it too much throttle. My rear wheel span up while turning and next thing I know i am thrown left into the ground with the bike landing on top of my leg.

I hit my helmet and left shoulder, then the crack as my leg breaks from the impact of the bike hitting it.

It took my totally by surprise, it happened in a flash. It’s not my first new tyre and I thought I was taking it easy enough. However looking back I should have really taken it slower and taken the bike out of sports mode and into rain.

I feel really stupid about the whole thing. The pain was the worse I have ever felt, and now I am a huge burden on the family for the coming weeks. My tib fib have been fixed up by the hospital with a giant nail, and I can only manage crutches for a few minutes at a time due to the pain.

The bike was a street triple rs which I have had for 4 years. Looks like I can fix it up for a few hundred quid with eBay parts. Whether or not I will have the confidence to ride it again remains to be seen.

I'm riding right now with a broken tib and fib (its mending but told I still need to uses crutches and not put weight on). Can show pics I did a cracking job (excuse the pun)

Sh*t happens. It was a silly mistake. Soon as you can partial weight bare get on and ride. I'm just over 3 months in with my break and riding with zero fear.

You know next time to scrub it in better and will learn from it

I will say though its a horrendous break - probably my worst and hurts for ages so good luck with that one

Sorry to learn of your mishap and fair play for admitting the causes.

I'll have a contemplative day thinking how I'd cope with being on crutches and being housebound.

You have my sympathy too. I did the same when I was quite young - flipped a trials bike and it wedged itself between my knee and the ground and snapped my tib & fib. Ended up with my foot next to my trouser pocket - still pointing forwards!

The ambulance crew said I'd either broken the bone or dislocated my knee, but advised I should hope it was a leg break. Luckily it was...

Mine was made worse as they set my leg too soon so it swelled up more in the cast. Had to have it re-broken after the first check up as it went at a weird angle. I can still bend my left knee the wrong way a bit and my leg's a bit of a funny shape but works ok.

One thing I will stress though is put the effort in on the physio. Took me a long while to be able to do even one rotation on an exercise bike as my knee was so stiff and I was told I'd always have limited bend in that knee but thanks to a really good physio I now have pretty much full movement again.

You will get better though and you will forget about it and get back on a bike. May feel a long way off but it will get better thumbup

Mine was in the 90s and based on the mess they made I think they took a rubbing with wax crayons instead of a proper x-ray hehe

In my case the bit of femur sticking out the side of my leg made it fairly obvious as to the problem... biglaugh

You’ll be back in the bike in no time and you’ll heal faster than you expect if you put the work in.

I came off in March, my own daft fault. Surgery to put my left arm back together a couple of days later and a few fractures in my spine.

Still have one small fracture in my spine on my last X-Ray but I bought a new bike in June and clocked up nearly 2k miles between June and beginning of October, most done with the fracture!

Good luck with the healing process, pain will pass soon (Or you just get used to it) and then can start working on the rehab

I’ll start you off. Shiny, new metal plate! X ray taken a couple of months after the surgery.

Wow there are some amazing recoveries, that gives me so much hope to get going again.

Nothing in the world beats riding bikes, I can see why people don’t stop even after some pretty horrendous accidents.

I always was careful with brand new tires, because in the manufacturing process,

the carcass has to leave the hot mould/press, for making this easier the is a sort of separating wax applied.

Resuidue of said wax is very slpppery, I used to get rid with a little burnout.

Why don’t they get a scrubbing to remove this residue before they are sold or is their some reason it’s left to wear off with use?

Now ya see with that second pic there is a reason I blur my x-rays. I'm not gonna say it but I'm sure I'm not the only one who see's it...

The below was my break end June which they put back together beginning July (3 days later). Done the tib and fib

Few years back I had a pretty horrific one which see me dislocate my hip, snap my femur, break my wrist, collar bone and a few ribs

A lesson to be learnt here. Don't have Mx bikes. Or at least I shouldn't...

There is some nice titanium alloy metalwork in this thread, top marks to the consultant surgeons in our NHS, I for one are forever grateful they saved my life and put me back together so I can still ride smile
