Hi, I would appreciate some buying advice please.

Seen this

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/bike-details/20220902...

I have always fancied one of these. However I have reservations about reliability.

What are people's thoughts on this?

Also are they tubed wheels?

Cheers

By all accounts they're pretty bombproof.

Usual BMW paint issues on the engine/gearbox/swingarm/final drive.

Poor suspension as standard, particularly the rear damper.

I had a 2015 bike and mine came with inner tubes fitted.
I had no reliability issues with the bike in my 3 years of ownership.
The paint on the frame seemed thin where my boots rubbed on the frame but other than that I found the finish was good and the bike cleaned up like new.

They are a lovely thing and pretty bomb proof, Like already mentioned the rear shock really does benefit from an upgrade along with the fork internals. Those wheels have inner tubes although you can get a kit which seals the spokes to make them tubeless (although I have not tried that) I love mine (2016 Sport), it's one of four Boxers I have and it would be the last to go.

A friend of mine has one, he's a serial bike changer but his R9T has stayed in the garage while another 10-12 have been & gone around it. The one linked looks like it's had the suspension done & a few other nice mods, so looks like a good one to go for.

I've got one and its absolutely fantastic. Pretty sure not much can really go wrong with them, they are very simple and running tried and tested BMW gear - none of the new stuff. Mines for sale (its a scambler, so not what you are after) but only because it doesnt fit me very well (6'6") - but otherwise I could see me keeping it forever.

Bought a 2015 one a few weeks ago.
The shock upgrades are about £1k ish - some say the bikes ride is awful, others are perfectly happy with it. The only time I felt it a bit off was 2 up pushing a bit hard down some lanes. In honesty its just not that sort of machine. It is certainly no worse than my previous F800 it replaced.
All the other farkles - well thats a matter of taste as there are sooo many bolt on bits available - I tend to make a change and leave it - for me I use it occasionally 2 up so need the pillion pegs / seat.
Personally I love the look of the OE exhaust (Akrapovic anyway!) plus the pre 17 bikes have easily removable dB killers and a simple cheap exhaust flap delete really makes them sound better.
Mine had bar end mirrors, engine bars, BMW alarm 7700 miles and new rubber.
Its a low mileage bike, but thats a decent wedge for a 14 plate. I was going to hold out till the winter / see who offloads in winter but the one I found was the right one.

Are you open to buying privately or just dealer? There were a few bikes about that were dropping in price - saw one 2015 with under 10k miles for £6250 - it didnt hang around though.

This for me is a keeper - plenty of torque and gets lots of attention - even if it is a bit marmite in looks. Plus the last tank I got 52mpg average - not bad for an 1170....

I have a 2018 Urban G/S - Great bike (I also have a Tiger 800, by way of comparison)

The suspension thing is a real problem. I’ve ordered a maxton replacement as I am getting tired of being bounced out of the seat midway through a corner - Motorways / Dual where they join tarmac together seems to be the worst. The A20 into London was horrendous. The only other thing is the lack of a fuel gauge - I’m used to it know and the reserve light system doesn’t bother me, but I still thought it was an odd thing to leave off a 2018 bike.

Other than that, I love it. The engine is lovely and that low-slung weight makes the bike really flattering to ride into corners - by comparison, the triumph feels like it needs more effort to haul the bike over and round the bend.

Any questions you have - let me know.

Are there any rules of thumb in terms of which year is good to buy and is better buying a later bike than earlier - or are they pretty much all the same (noting the comments above re pre 2017 exhaust)?

Assume heated grips and cruise control were not options?

For the Classic - Only much later bikes have cruise, mine has heated grips (15).
17 on bikes get adjustable front forks (classic USD only i believe) as the others are all conventional however there are several kits that can give you preload compression and rebound for between £400 - £2500 Andreani kit vs Ohlins forks)
Rear shocks reworked on later bikes but ive not read whether they are any better.
Pre 17 bikes have the 3 part clocks where later have the display in the bottom of each dial. There are loads of vids on YT, spend some time and see they reviews. Thats what I did while my arm was mending!
