Protest against Hackney M/C parking charges - Save London Motorcycling & London MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) joint demo

Coverage on MCN: https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/motorcycle-par...

Visordown: https://www.visordown.com/news/general/protest-rid...

The event was rescheduled to this coming Saturday from September so as to respect the period of national mourning.

Support much appreciated!

From London MAG FB page:

In autumn this year Hackney council plan to bring in parking charges for all motorcycles and scooters, including
• all motorcycles and scooters, petrol and electric, to be charged the same prices as cars
• solo motorcycle bays charged at up to £6 an hour
• banning commuting with 4 hour maximum stay limits in most bays
• permits up to £850 a year for residents, £1800 for businesses
These charges are based on dodgy data that massively misrepresents motorcycle emissions.
We are coming together to protest these charges and show Hackney and other London boroughs that they can't get away with it. If these charges go ahead it could mean the end of motorcycling in London.

We are going to meet on Downs Park Road, Hackney E5 8JY. ///radio.canny.forum and ride the route in a safe, legal and courteous manner, obeying all road traffic regulations.
It will be your responsibility for your bike to be legal.
Because we want people to be as safe as possible we require no filtering, you will also need to keep about a car length of space between us and for safety reasons not riding directly behind each other but staggered so that you have room to brake quickly if needed, this will give the rider behind a chance to slow down and stop safely.
We will publish the route here after checking it is safe.
We will have marshals to make sure you know where you are going, please obey all their requests.
If you have a problem please attract their attention and they will help if they can.
The route is about 1 mile, we hope that you have time to do at least a couple of circuits.
We won't have an official finish time, so when you have to go please leave.
Hope you can make it.

They just introduced it in Paris, but it's only for the petrol powered bikes, electric are exempt.

Bikes should pay the same as cars?

Anyway, notwithstanding the above, if you’re a motorcyclist, why are you happy with any additional cost to bikes?

I dont disagree that bikes should be charged, but I disagree that they should be restricted on how long they can be parked up for. Motorcycles in cities are a great alternative to public transort for many, and to remove that by imposing a limit on how long someone can park is a backward step.

FYI bikes can put out some pretty bad hydrocarbon emissions.

Charging something is one thing, but do you think they should be charged the same as a car? Even in a bike bay, where bikes would be parking at least 6 to the space of a car?

Don’t disagree that scooters are awful, but ‘too’? In addition to what?

Bikes are a solution not the problem - much less fuel consumption than cars, a congestion solution, not problem. This is evidenced by Transport for London themselves, with powered two wheelers exempt form
the Congestion Charge and allowed to use all TFL red route bus lanes alongside cyclists (following an earlier extended trial period).

Current gen scooters / 125’s (and the Yamaha Nmax 125 is the most popular selling bike in the UK) are so efficient that they put out meaningfully less emissions / co2 per KM than TFL’s figures for each passenger Km
on a London bus.

Unfortunately, the powers that be don’t always think in this detail and lump everyone together.

If you care about motorcycling in London and the precedent that Hackney may create please write to the council or join the protest.

Guest speakers tomorrow include:

TV/radio presenter Matthew Wright, GMB regional organiser Steve Garelick, Karen Neill of Zenith motorcycles and Andrew Almond of Bolt motorcycles.

That all seemed to go smoothly enough.

Good turnout, no one fell off.

Edit: would’ve been good if all stuck to the ‘no filtering & single file’ plan.
