Wondered if anyone had a viewpoint on maxton (or other aftermarket shocks ) for the RnineT?

They've been strongly recommended to me, and lots of good owner reviews, but they aren't cheap..around £700 for the rear IIRC.

Backstory: I bought a 2018 RnineT (urban G/S ) to do this year's malle rally on. I bought the bike in Feb and DD the rally in June. I rode it around from Feb to June and loved it (still love it !).. the day I showed for rally folks were looking at the assembled bikes, a few folks said to me "nice bike, have you sorted the suspension?"...I thought nothing of it.

I found out in Wales what they meant, the 'pogoing' is pretty bad in corners and on uneven roads, or even if if the road is smooth, but the bump frequency gets to a magic number, the bike just bottoms out.

Now I've noticed, I can't 'unnotice' and I need to get it sorted !

TIA

No experience of a R9T but they're local to me and did my front forks and like you say not cheap, but they do an excellent job.

They're a proper setup and I'm sure it'll improve your bike no end.

I have a Maxton rear shock and fork internals fitted to my R9T sport. They transformed the bike TBH, so much more composed on the B roads around here. Before I changed them I would be out of the seat more than on it on some of the roads around here.

Thanks, this is useful as a reference. I can relate to the pogoing... It's really brutal on B roads , and on the m25 where the surface joins between tarmac and concrete, it's really bad

I fitted the basic Nitron to mine, I think it was circa £450, was really impressed with it.

Thanks, did you only change the rear?

Maxton recommended just changing out the rear and if then the front forks seem too soft, then get those resprung/revalved if needed...

Hyperpro do a fork spring and rear shock package for a pretty decent price. Assuming your model is in their list it’s worth considering.

Yep, only the rear, the basic Nitron is 1 way adjustable for damping (rebound and compression together) and height adjustable. The front was a lot more expensive so didn’t get round to doing it.

I have an R9T and the original shock and spring were bordering on dangerous. It was poorly damped, under sprung - even after having a new spring and the shock re-valved, it was still harsh and felt very basic.

MCT fitted a Nitron R3 and it transformed the bike, much better controlled, plusher and adjustable. I also have the Nitron fork cartridges and together with the shock it now handles like a modern bike, rides faster, smoother, brakes better, everything is better and plusher. I think the R1 or R2 would have been just as good on the R9T.

I think a lot of manufacturers fit shoddy suspension parts as a way of saving money and just hope the majority of their customers don't know the difference.

no experience of the r9t but i have a maxton shock and fork cartridges on my monster.

i contacted a few suppliers, maxton were the only ones to respond properly, with a 2 page pdf of their assessment of the standard bike characteristics and how they'd improve it. this largely agreed with my own butt dyno, and a further convo lead to them recommending i spec down on the rear shock as i had no intention to track it.

totally transformed the bike for me, money very well spent and i'm deffo a maxton fan. all comms are handled by ron and richard [founder and son], very easy to deal with.

must add here that k-tech wouldn't even entertain selling to me direct. wilbers were the other option at the same price range but it was that pdf that really swung it given my location and inability to describe myself what i thought the handling was doing vs how i wanted it to be.

No experience of the 9T but the Wilbers shock I bought for my old Suzuki V Strom was beautiful. Fantastic build quality and a really smooth, supple ride.

I can highly recommend Brooks (in the link) I have had my ZZR1400 (Forks fitted with K-tech internals (rear is already Ohlins)) and CBR600 (Forks fitted with K-tech internals and Nitron R2 shock supplied)) by them. Transformed both bikes and great company to deal with.

Go for Nitron. They're about £450 for the R1. I have one on my VFR1200F and it's fantastic - also have a k tech piston kit in the front at £300 fitted.

Another maxton fan, not a r9t, but the same problem as you. Fitted a nr4, 3 trackdays and hundreds of different road miles it's an excellent choice. I did only go for the cheapest shock they sell because I didn't feel the need to fiddle with it to much.
Still 600 bucks though.

I've used Maxton a few times over the years for race bikes, they're fairly local (luckily) and Richard will spend as much time as you need to go through what you need and help setting everything up.

I cannot comment about your specific bike, but I would say you would be in safe hands with Maxton.

Cheers Rick! I thought I recognised your CBR600 on another post cool

Have a look at the KTech Razor R shock too. IMHO, for the price you can't beat it.

Transformed my GSXS1000

I put the basic Nitron rear shock on a 20k mile Gsxr and found it no improvement at all for normal road use.

Yep, great shocks for the money but K-Tech only have their DDS Lite (£954.00) and DDS Pro (£1,242.00) shocks available for the RnineT smile
