Left work this evening to find some scum has stolen the speedo / instrument cluster (whatever you want to call it) from my bike (BMW s1000rr).

No broken fixing points, looks like it just pulls off and disconnect 3 cables.

Fuming.

It runs but no lights, no brake light, indicators etc. Got the bike home just in case they were on their way back later to take it.

Searching eBay now but any ideas where else to buy a replacement? I hate to think what BMW will charge for a new one.

Also, a warning to others, although not sure you can stop it.

I know it's an issue on certain bikes - there are several "fixes" such as protective cages etc

The problem is that unless you claim on your insurance, the majority will buy a used one off ebay and carry on feeding the problem

Which model s1000rr? (year). I have a gen 4 and often think how easy the dash would be to remove.

Well, any part of it really frown

You could consider one of these instrument braces

I just fitted one to my new R1250GS

Someone on FB said their display had been stolen off a KTM 790duke , prone to cracking in sunlight, and expensive to replace....

Might see a rise in these thefts as money gets tighter.

Unfortunately this is a particular problem for TFT dashes on BMWs - it just unscrews! As noted above, you can buy brackets to go over the top of the dash to make theft more difficult - have a look at Nippy Normans for one. A replacement dash from BMW is no doubt eye-watering (sorry)

Thanks

Rob

That seems very reasonably priced although I'm surprised he hasn't used security screws, easy enough to upgrade though

Each TFT is coded to the bike’s ECU. So buying a used one off eBay won’t work. A new one from BMW (if the scrotes didn’t cut the wiring harness) is somewhere around £1500 IIRC.

Not really something new unfortunately, people have been nicking expensive bits from bikes for years.

People I have known have lost end cans, brake calipers, headlights and even for one guy the full set of forks, front wheel, mudguard etc; the feckers just unbolted the yokes, cut the brake hoses, lifted the rest of the bike off and dumped it in its side.

If its that easy, why didn't you pull it off and put it in your bag.

They can be easily recoded, hence the theft.

On the GS there is quite a lot of dismantling to do anyway which I guess is the principle deterrent as it becomes a 20 minute task rather than just a few seconds

I bought a Cymarc protector for peace of mind as I like to tour a bit. The TFT is only secured by 3 circlips and a cable, so can be removed by a hard pull. It could be broken in the process, but I doubt your average herbert is going to lose too much sleep over that.

The guard is really well made and solid and looks quite oem level to me. The fitting took time, but as it was high quality everything lined up to the millimetre - all too rare in aftermarket. Recommend the Cymarc one - they make their own kit, are really helpful and as you don’t have any man in the middle creaming off profit, you pay for the quality directly.

I did a straw poll on the GS UK group on Facebook and (in rough terms) 2% of respondents had been victims. One comment by a home counties BMW dealership employee reckoned he’d seen about 13 bikes through that had been hit and my local in Hampshire has seen about 3 - all from London. Despite the inevitable comments off the Facebook nob contingent (it’s not a real problem / you don’t need one etc.) it’s clearly happening (sorry Battlecat for proving this), but seems to be a London problem… for now.

Im surprised they anre not coded to the bike tbh.

A few years back the dealer I was working for the keys for a 999....had to buy a new dash and full lockset iirc

Sorry to hear OP - does seem a proper design fault across a number of BMWs.
