Owned a RD250 back in 1979 and was on L plates.
FF to today am I right to ride the bike legally now you need to do,
CBT-Therery-Practical-A2
Plus protective gear,
About £1500!!!
I now own a 1980 RD250 so would be great to use it on the road again.

£1500 is a reasonable budget just for gear.

CBT, Theory, MOD1, MOD2 I think still, which will give you a full licence. A2 is for young pups. smile

Nice bike btw

The tests (theory, mod 1 and Mod 2) are the same for all classes of license the only difference is the size of the engine. As you are over 24 do the test on a 600cc bike and you'll be able to ride any bike. A2 just means you've passed on a smaller capacity bike and if you want a faster bike you'll have to take the tests again.

I don't think you'll save money doing it on a smaller bike.

He’s right, it’s no cheaper. Also, not all training schools have A2 bikes. It’s very low demand and means they have to stock another range of bikes other than 600’s and 125’s. As others have said, the training and testing is identical so best to do them on a bigger bike and then you have a full unrestricted bike license.

A2 is for those younger than 24.

The training as well as the tests are exactly the same for the full A licence. Only difference is the capacity of bike the training and testing is undertaken on.

The test and training is exactly the same for A or A2, only difference is the bike. May aswell just do A so if your circumstances change or you change your mind in X years, you’ll be absolutely fine and won’t need to redo Mod 1 and Mod 2.

That’s a good point actually. Is is possible to do A2 tests if you’re over 24?

And often you use the same bike for the A test and the A2 they just whack a restrictor in.

Definitely go for the unrestricted license - assuming you're over 24...

Yes definitely do the full test. A young guy I know has done A2, it didn't seem any cheaper. Besides, you might enjoy it enough to get something else too.

Licence might come in use at other times too. I recently got my bike serviced at a specialist place right out in the country. Found out on the day it was going to end up taking a lot longer than expected. I was offered a loan bike to get home, which I wouldn't have been able to ride on an A2. Would have been a long 7 hours otherwise.

An uninsured rider then? If so, not good.

No cheaper at all. My friends son was doing his training at same time as me, he is 22.

We did a few sessions together, I was on an MT07, he was on a CB500R. He paid exactly same amount as I did per session, his Mod 1 and Mod 2 fees were same and the tests were identical.
