To my mind, in the next twelve months;

  • Inflation possibly exceeds 12% - We all have much less expendable income.
  • Fuel costs could easily double for all vehicles.
  • Winter will be very expensive, most of us will be skint by January.
  • New motorcycle costs will rise due to a number of factors.
  • Cheap finance is greatly reduced due rising interest rates. Likely to reduce new purchases of motorcycles.
  • Demand for cheap transport may rise.
  • Demand for unnecessary leisure motorcycles may fall.
How will this translate to the used motorcycle market do we think?

In the last year or so motorcycles have gone up in price (although I think a lot of that is our currency is just worth less than it was), but will it go up, or down? Place your bets...

I think it'll go one of two ways, depending how brutal the gas prices get over winter:

1) People will be struggling, but not selling too desperately, and the market will be pretty stagnant as it is. Prices similar, but volumes low
2) People are absolutely knackered because they can't put the heating on and afford to do a weekly shop, everybody flogs whatever they've got for rock-bottom prices, and the floor falls out of everything except nearly-new.

I think another factor as well be the marked fall in new motorcyclists which would reinforce your point.

Who the fk can afford a £1,000 DAS course?

Older (90's to early 2010's) "normal" bikes will remain the same or go up slightly.
Rare or specialist bikes will continue to rise, but more slowly.
Mid 2010's to current will depreciate at the current rate before hitting a plateau.

Exceptions here are any I own/buy, which will drop by approx. 20%.

Purely anecdotal but I’m always looking to see what’s about, albeit mostly at nearly new adventure and trail bikes.

I think nearly new and used prices at the moment are very high, partially a summer thing, but very few bargains around at the moment. Asking prices are high and anything reasonably priced goes almost immediately.

It doesn’t help that new bikes are also quite hard to get hold of. I was looking for a 690 Enduro but every dealer near me said probably no more until Spring 2023. There are rumours that the BMW R1250GS will be delivered with halogen headlights rather than LED until next year, just to keep the bikes moving out of the factory.

I’m not sure which way things will go. As said above, either the increasing cost of living will increase used bike sales (luxury compared to heating) or people will hang onto them until things improve.

There still seems to be a surprising amount of Covid money still hovering about and my local multi-brand dealer still seems to have used and new bikes flying off the floor so who knows?

TLDR: I have no idea.

I think we've not really lost the rise that came from COVID so prices are high anyway. At the same time money will generally be tighter, so luxuries will be squeezed, meaning I think there will be a drop in price but I think it'll be slow and it won't be too far.

When it's a choice of up or down that's a pretty safe statement! biggrin

I think supply of new bikes is the biggest issue at the moment. You try placing an order for something or just enquiring about the lead times. Some manufacturers are really struggling to keep up with demand.

As a consequence, used prices are being pushed up. They may be quelled somewhat by the cost of living issue but for most people, bikes are a luxury.

I'm on a few FB biking groups and there seems to be a lot of bikes up for sale, including quite a few track bikes.

A good portion of the road bikes are less than 2 years old, which baffles me if I am honest.

I also see a lot of track day availability now compared to a few years ago, you'd struggle to get a place on trackdays if you were quick and book months in advance, whereas now a lot of trackdays aren't running near capacity. I know TD's have also gone up in terms of cost.

My point is everything is getting more expensive, tyres being another item and the shortage, so lot's of 2nd hand bikes available more than I can recall for some time personally. I'd hazard a guess that if you want a 2nd hand bike there's lots about and supply is outstripping demand current which in theory should drive the price down.

For most, me included a bike is a leisure item so if there's a squeeze and you don't have much £££ disposable income it's got to be on the radar to sell at the height of summer, typically prices will soften later in the year.

I find the reality is usually; anything I own will drop in value (especially if I try to sell it) but anything I want to own will be going up. frown

Facts.. My automotive financial experience is usually similar. Buy high, sell low. I have a few bikes and try to own bikes that mean something to me, so I hold onto them longer.

I don’t buy bikes in the hope I make some money, which is just as well, as I never do.. banghead

Same old same old, i loose money on every second hand vehicle i sell regardless of all the hype about stuff going up.
Try selling a 10k plus second hand bike ( valued competitively ) and watch the tumble weeds go buy rolleyes Every bloke and his dog wont pcp.

Saying that i think the so called classic 80's and 90's bikes might take a tumble or have at least reached there peak.

I guess the lower end affordable commuter stuff might have some staying power.

Bumping as I've noticed sub £3k market actually has some decent bikes available again. Secondhand bike prices in general seem very reasonable now: is that a fair impression, or have I just become used to inflation?

Prices are still going up IME

With more demand this year than last (so far)

I'm happy to look at any examples and there is always the odd bargain but I rarely see a row of cheap bikes when scrolling through the ads, which I did 3 years ago

Common sense says they have to come down and should come down but that's just not what I'm seeing

I’d agree with this. Inflation is rampant and more exposure to higher interest rates will be needed before anything changes. I’m thinking the back end of 2024.

Watching the Iconic auction at Shuttleworth a the moment. Whatever used prices are looking like, it looks like the 'classic' stuff just isn't selling.

Just flicked through the results and a lot of stuff seemed to be quite strong money? Usual suspects (60s hard to start) excepted!

You're definitely right about the 60s stuff but with the exception of the proper classics, the Broughs, Indians etc, little seemed to be achieving the lower end of the guide prices. It's not always obvious that a lot hasn't sold because the auctioneer won't always comment on it.

I thought if it doesn’t have “buy it now” price it’s sold on their website?

We sold an SS80 Brough about 5 years ago and got about what they were bidding up to today. I think there was some massively inflated asking prices a few years ago (ours included when someone offered to sell it for us!).

The Vincents sold for about what I’d expect; 20k for an iffy numbered twin up to high 30s for a decent one.

The Model X Matchless was a bit of a bargain I’d have thought although those vintage ones aren’t meant to be as good as the later ones. The BSA v-twin was pretty cheap too. The Velo MOV sold for 4 grand which seems the going rate.

Had I been there I think the Velocette Thruxton would’ve been coming home for under 10 grand!

Starting to be an issue in the car world as well. Beyond the big name/big ticket stuff younger people (and by younger I mean probably sub 50) who have the cash aren't interested in a lot of the brands and models that used to draw a reasonable return. I'm in my late 30s and see a lot of things being listed at these auctions with gushing descriptions about how amazing they are and the history of them and most of the time my only response is "never heard of it".
