Looking for some insight and experiences from those that have had either a KTM Freeride, Beta X trainer or any other similar bike.

At the moment I have a 2005 Yamaha WR250F that I use for riding on the moore and pootling around the local MX track with my son. It does see a bit of road use getting to and from some local trails including the odd section of dual carriageway but it's mainly off-road use. The problem I have with the WR is it's height. Even at 6ft the 39.3" seat height means I lay the thing dow A LOT. If there's any sort of dip or hole either side when you stick a foot down you can guarantee it's going down.

So this is what's led me to bikes like the freeride and the x trainer. I want something that will fulfil the same duties as the WR but is a bit more playful. Not bothered if it's 2T or 4T but the more robust and maintenance free the better. If any of the more serious bikes are a bit lower than the WR I'd happily go for one of those but I don't really want an aggressive race machine.

Didn’t the freeride get heavily slated because it was a compromise on all fronts and ultimately not much cop at any of them. Also no kickstart and unreliable electric start?

All the reviews I've watched on Youtube seem to be positive. Conclusion seems to be it's like a cross between a trials bike and an enduro bike. My main concern is that the 2T tops out at around 50mph I believe and the 4T is a very gawky looking thing. The X trainer on the other hand seems to be more slanted towards a beginners enduro bike which possibly suits me better. I think it's like a lower, de-tunned RR judging by reviews.

2 friends have X trainers and like them.At local ride outs(in SW France) they are also popular.
You get basic suspension and a softer power delivery(change the expansion chamber if you want normal power).
A group from the UK visited recently with 3 Xtrainers,1 Freeride and a couple of KTM 300 tpi.
For the money X trainers are a mega bike which are often overlooked because they are viewed as a novice bike.
I have had my arse handed to me many times by my more skillful friend on his X trainer.

Edit.
The Xtrainer is lower than most and you can get a lowering kit if it’s still to tall.

We (my son and I) share a 350exc, a 300tpi exc, and a 350 Freeride. We got the Freeride when he was 13 and a bit small for a full size enduro. I really like the Freeride. It’s got great low down punch and is brill for climbing over stuff or technical trails. It’s not so comfortable at the really quick stuff, but it’s a great fun little bike… I can’t bring myself to sell it.
