Key requirements

- Doesn't flap violently when riding, that's one thing that is very irritating!
- IS waterproof
- Packs down relatively well for a long distance ride

I've just discovered that my recently bought Dainese Tempest jacket isn't waterproof at all and I'm out of time to find a jacket that will be longterm so for now I'm going to take my Course XLMoto jacket (that I love) and use a throw over for wet days.

I've got a Held 1 piece suit that ive had for a few years, just take it on touring holidays and only had to use it a few times so far. Saying that it did keep the Scottish rain out for 3 consecutive days, riding a naked bike for 4 hours a day at motorways speeds. So id say it works. Does not flap about too much, quite a good fit for me over my leather jacket n jeans.

The flap about issue is often the result of a compromise. You will only put this kit on when you need to. Often that'll be mid journey, when the rain has already started (so the oversuit now "sticks" to the damp outer of your jacket and trousers), with traffic flowing past you at some speed. You already have your helmet and boots on and are struggling to balance on one leg. Getting an oversized suit makes that process so much easier, but you then get the flap in in use.

Like all things in life, be careful what you wish for.

I have this and although I hardly ever get caught in the rain, when I have it has been faultless

I have SCOTT waterproofs. Not cheap but very good...as in Outer Hebrides in April good. The flapping thing is an issue. In my experience to stop them flapping you have to buy as small as possible the issue then is getting them on. I have over the years learnt to sacrifice a little flapping for ease of fitment particularly as my fastest years are now well.behind me.

After over 40 years of trying, I've concluded that delaying the inevitable is the best I can hope for.

I have one of the aforementioned 'boil in the bag' type over jackets from Richa (but same jacket is sold by several brands) and it has a high collar, maybe 50-60 mm which I zip up fully with a neck buff below and I've not had water down my neck for years. Helmet is a Shoei NXR which does have a small spoiler type affair at the base of the helmet which I believe helps water to flick off to the back rather than run down the back.

Completely left field but I came across the Knox Pro underarmour at 115£ direct and I've found an old Musto BR2 offshore jacket that I always thought would never work on the bike (it would never fit over a normal bike jacket) however it'd spot on over the Knox.

Problem solved and I've now got a multi functional armour set for any jacket or on its own.

Don't be confused. Armour does not really offer abrasion protection and that's is probably the top requirement for motorcycle protective gear. Not an issue if you are fully aware of that and are making a conscious decision.

Aye buy the Knox is still pretty decently made and protected on its own. A decent coat over the top adds to that.

Even a decent textile won't do better above certain speeds to my combo.

Ride within your limits and use your car sixth sense applied to bikes would be better served.

A rain suit that’s genuinely waterproof, packs down small and doesn’t flap? I use and recommend Held Rainblock gear. The Rainblock material is stretchy, which means it’s straightforward to put on without the need to be oversized. No flapping.

Klim’s Gore-Tex Enduro jacket and Torrent trousers look terrific on paper. They’re too pricey for my rain suit budget, but you might want to check them out.
