I had a demo ride on a Z900 at the weekend, I preferred the ZX10R but being realistic insurance is still extortionate and it's probably not best suited to my local roads, however I came away very impressed with it. Lovely engine with enough power for normal roads, handling felt quite nimble and I liked the TFT, rider modes and the idea of a bit of an electronic safety net. I feel I need to get a test ride on a Street Triple R and RS for comparison.

Has anyone ridden both and be able to give an opinion on the strengths and weaknesses of each? Also any other similar bikes that should be considered?

Reliability is important as it would be my only bike, would need to be fun to ride with some emphasis on the handling. My riding is for my own enjoyment with spring and Summer commuting once or twice a week (40 mile round trip on A and B roads) and I ride all year round, albeit a bit more selective in the winter months.

I've ridden a Z800 and 675 + the 765

For me no comparison would take the Triumph every time - 765 ideally as it pulls better and has electronics to aid a bit

The Z800 for me just felt heavy and old school. It had a loud exhaust and screamed like a typical lower powered IL4 but that was about it

The Z800 was a very different bike to the Z900 though - awful things.

From what I have read they are quite different, I would be looking at a 2022 Z900.

I would need to ride both to be sure but I think the ohlins could be a fair bit stiffer than the suspension on the Z or the triple R, the Brembo's would probably be of more benefit to me as any extra braking performance could make the difference when you really need it.

I'd recommend a 22MY MT09 but by god they are ugly.

I wouldn't say I've ruled out an MT09, the reviews aren't particularly complimentary about the front end which makes me think it might not have the kind of feeling I want. Looks are a bit subjective.

I had considered the GSXS, it's a lot of bike for the money but insurance is almost double that of the Z900 or Street RS. Getting my third year of NCB next year would drop it a bit but as the bike wouldn't be garaged I think it's going to be an issue for a few more years yet.

Exactly that, I keep contemplating getting rid of mine because it really isn’t anything special to look at… and then I ride it and I can’t help but want to keep it.

They say the same thing about the less attractive girls too, back in the day before the Woke Stasi ruled our lives, actions and thoughts, I believe the phrase was "you don't look at the mantelpiece when you are stoking the fire"
