Does anyone have any technical (electronic) knowledge regarding a 2014 Yamaha R1 please ?

A mate of a mate has just returned to the UK after living in South Africa for many years and has brought his bike back with him
Because it is less than ten years old he is saying it has to go for an inspection before being registered here......but its digital speedometer is in KMH, and to pass that inspection it must me in MPH.

He has called into a local motorcycle dealer (not a Yamaha dealer, Kawasaki I think), Skellerns of Worcester (or whatever they are called now), and they've told him it'll need a new speedo at a cost of £1000 plus.

This seems odd to me, I can't imagine Yamaha making two speedometer assemblies, much more likely it is software set or a jumper etc.
Anyone able to help ?

Simply in the setting on the dash (according to the forums anyway)

Google is your friend.

1) Turn ignition to the "on" position
2) Cycle the display till you get to the mileage.
3) Hold down select button until the speed readout changes to kmh or mph.

It would make me think twice about that dealer if a 3 second google gets the answer versus spending a grand on a new speedo. Though it's only fair to point out the above is a direct copy and paste from a (model year) 04-06 forum

I don't think I've ever been in there, I ride a Guzzi...........sadly they don't seem to have many dealers left these days and getting anything for it after Brexst is a nightmare !

But that's a different sob story.

I was surprised when he told me last week, I don't personally know of a digital cluster that can't be switched, but, he assured me that he was being told that his couldn't be.

It may be worth pointing out...to the odd piss taker, that he is a gentlemen in his 70s (yes ....even older than me), so fair play to him for even being able to ride an R1 at his age (I couldn't), and perhaps we can forgive him for not consulting Google.

The Japanese used to disable the KPH to MPH switching on lots of bikes, to help stop the flood of Euro imports. Earlier non-UK R1s, R6s, SP1/2s and a ton of other bikes that were delivered in KPH, were stuck with it. Many could be modded though, like the 1998-2002 R1s. UK bikes would switch no problem.

The OPs mate should be ok though.
