I've just finished (successfully so it seems) replacing the cylinderhead on my cbf500 due to damage- first time I've touched engine internals.

I've got the urge to carry on with something cheaper and simpler now and I'm getting drawn to Jawa Babetta, Honda PA50, Puch Maxi etc for some strange reason.

I realise these are horrible little things but for a couple of hundred quid they seem like some good fun could be had.

Basically, are any of these to be avoided more than the other? How much work are they to derestrict? I owned an RS50 and an RS125 years ago that I definitely didn't derestrict.......

I very much doubt any of those would be restricted anyway, they probably struggle to make 5hp combined!! My thoughts would be to relive your youth and restore an old RS50 or 125, at least it’ll have some sort of financial and sentimental value when done.

Reminiscing is great. I still miss my 1985 Kawasaki AR50 that I bought in 1989 when I was 16biggrin. Gold Alloy Wheels, Disc Brakes, a Rev Counter and of course finished in Kawasaki Greencool

Standard clothing was Jeans, a Paddock Jacket and Reebok Boots. I did keep my mid range AGV Helmet in perfect condition. Happy Times.

I'd suggest a C90 would be better. At least there's a resale market for them. It might cost a couple of hundred more to start with but that will more than come back when you've finished and want to sell. Paint, chrome, powder coating etc. costs the same no matter what the bike is. There's probably far better parts supply for the Honda as well (both new and secondhand) so you won't get stuck half way. I wish I'd never sold my C100 (the OHV 50cc model before the C50/C70/C90) but as I never had it running it was just clutter.

I always fancied doing that but was concerned that if there was an accident, my insurance wouldn’t pay out. When riding with mates who had done such things I would just lag behind frown

Couldn’t find one of my AR50 also with 80cc top end but this was its replacement that I may or may not have rode with the 50cc number plate and tape over the 125cc prior to my 17th birthday
