No shock really, he has been less than worth his seat this year, but what it does confirm is that the Yamaha is clearly a bike built for one man alone, nobody else, even former race winners, world champions and young talents can ride it, it is obvious to anyone that Dovi would be a podium man on a working Yamaha, But it is clear that bikes has gone down a road where only one rider can use it, sound familiar Honda, Ducati 2007?

This isn't quite the case - the fundamental DNA of the Yamaha and how to make it go fast round a circuit hasn't changed. It's just now only Fabio Quatararo can get it to a position where it can compete with Ducati. It's always been slightly down on power, but with higher corner speed and better traction (sometimes), than the opposition. However as the Ducati now turns reasonably well and the Yamaha hasn't turned up the power, to ride the Yamaha you have to make your lap time on the brakes - a bit like Marquez on the Honda.

Get someone else that can do this and Yamaha will have a competitive second rider. Dovi has always been known for being good on the brakes but he needs a rear tyre with less grip than the Michelin offers. Plus he is now, in MotoGP terms, old (even if he's two years younger than me). As such, I'm extremely surprised that Yamaha didn't move for Joan Mir given Morbidelli's performances on his return from knee surgery.

Expected, but still a shame. He's been one of my favourite riders for 18 years, I'm still sore at Lorenzo for '07, and his '19 Spielberg win had me screaming as much as Tardozzi. Intelligent, thoughtful and consistent.

Sad to see him go and that it didn't work out at Yamaha. One of my favourite riders too.

Shame he didn't take that Aprilia seat with hindsight.

Hopefully he makes his way to WSBK but I don't think that's likely somehow.
