Anyone live in/near Liverpool? I'm looking for some local knowledge. smile

I'm trying to plan a route up to the Steam Packet dock for a 7:15pm boat, from Whitchurch (well, from a lot further south, but passing through Whitchurch).

Simple question - at that time of day (5:30 - 6:30pm) which route will have the worst traffic?

A41 -> M53 -> Bromborough -> A41 -> Birkenhead -> Queensway Tunnel

OR

A49 -> Stretton -> M56 -> M6 -> M62 -> etc.

I know the non-tunnel route is longer (by about 20 miles ish) - but I would think that the tunnel traffic delays would negate that - but I've not been up there for about 15 years or so.

On paper (map) the tunnel route looks shorter, but is it actually quicker/easier or not?

May be over the Mersey Crossing at Runcorn. M56 J12 ?
Whitchurch A49 to Tarporley/Frodsham over the Mersey Crossing? A49 is a great bike road i recon.
Once over the Mersey you can ge on the Dock Road after Speke/Aigburth via Jericho Lane.

You're posting in the 'biker' section which leads me to presume you'll be on a bike. In which case, why should traffic be an issue?

A41 - m53 - A41 all the way into the Queensway tunnel, tunnel forks off inside it and brings you out on The Strand directly opposite the ferry terminal.

Traffic won't be too bad, some filtering like normal really.

There's 4 of us, and one is NOT a confident filterer. Keeping a group together through traffic is pretty hard.

This! As long as there isn't an accident on the M53 that'll be fine.

If there is get back on the A41 and just follow it down, it's a 40mph road most of the way from Ellesmere Port to the tunnel.

Context: I live just off the A41 between Chester and E. Port. smile

A49 i like from Whitchurch

a bit st through beeston and up to A54 cross roads. on to the mersey gateway which is free and into liverpool through dodge city (speke)

if you go the tunnels they are free just get in the correct bike only lane early and don't do what i once did just pull up to an unmanned barrier and expect it to open sillywobblegetmecoat
