I remember watching his accident and thinking how unlucky he was to be seriously injured in that type of accident. He wasn't struck by another bike, just low sided and then I think the bike flipped when it went into the gravel. Would modern protective clothing have made a difference?

Proper old-school that; bolt-upright, knees tucked in, none of that stupid, modern, leg-dangling nonsense...
You do realise he's paralysed from the chest down? Rubin215 said:

You do realise he's paralysed from the chest down? If it was meant to be funny .... It wasn't.

Schwantz was always my fav way back to the transatlantic challenge days
Same, and his battles with Rainey were the best! However Wayne Rainey to me as an overall package had the edge on all of them. IMHO he was to GP’s what Joey Dunlop is to the Roads, the all time greatest.

I just can’t get into MOTO GP at the moment, preferring the TT and BSB, whereas in the late 80’s and early 90’s I absolutely loved GP racing. The list of greats around this time was endless, Lawson, Gardner, Schwantz, Spencer, Mackenzie and many others.
However Wayne Rainey to me as an overall package had the edge on all of them. IMHO he was to GP’s what Joey Dunlop is to the Roads, the all time greatest.
Great riders, with personalities.....current MotoGP riders don't appear to possess any personality; and if they do, they very rarely show it. However Wayne Rainey to me as an overall package had the edge on all of them. IMHO he was to GP’s what Joey Dunlop is to the Roads, the all time greatest.
