Following the snapping of yet another downpipe stud on another thread this of course is a recurring theme.

They obviously sit in the line of fire especially on a naked bike but could manufacturers use different materials so that this doesn’t happen?

Of course they won’t because it might add 50p to the price of a bike but is the technology freely available?

Yes they could fit better studs, but I suppose by the time people are taking off downpipes it’s likely to be in older bikes and not worth them considering.

The heat cycles would be pretty brutal for most materials, bigger studs would probably solve the issue though!

Yes it’s annoying, no I wouldn’t expect a change any time soon.

Ti studs solve the issue.

But a massive expense for a manufacturer vs the standard fitment, and largely unnecessary. By the time it leaves the dealer network/regular service where it might need attention, nobody cares..

Back in the day Kawasaki (and most likely others, but I definitely know Kawasaki did) fitted dome nuts to the studs. This meant the thread was encapsulated, so 20 years later you could just undo them, no snapping or crusty threads in sight. One of the first things I do when I buy a bike to keep, get the original header nuts off and in the bin and fit stainless steel dome nuts, costs pennies and means when you actually need to get them off it's easy smile
