KTM lazy sales
Discussion
Im trying to get a test ride on the KTM 1290 asas ,Im based in E,Sussex, the nearest dealer to me is kent so rang to enquire about the bike and salesman said he would ring back to discuss the bike, So 2 days later still no call back, I then thought I would try talking to someone else and ended up talking to a girl in the clothes dpt! asked her if she could see if there was a bike in the showroom I could come and look at and she replied yes there was and should she get someone to call back, obviously this wasnt a good idea through passed experience so I said not to bother was a nice day and I would ride out just to have physical look. on arriving talked to a salesboy about a test ride but was not possible as a bike needed to be pdi'd to put on as demo and this would take a week, So made arrangements that I would call them in a week to see how this was going. A week passed so made the call, salesboy said a bike needed to come from their other store and made arrangements and set date and time for the ride, On the actual day just as im leaving got a txt ,bike not available as sick van driver didnt bring the bike over and they would call to make new arrangements, So a month has passed and not a dicky, my god what an appalling dealership are these guys and god forbid you bought one and got problems with it,I know Ktm have got a bad rep but surely shouldnt they vet these dumb dealers first before letting them add to the bad reputation or is this just a sad state of the industry....
There’s no way you won’t enjoy it!
Personally I’d just go for it but shop around the web for the best deal. I’d be happy to pay a little over the odds to a local dealer for that personal relationship but from your experience I’d avoid that dealer as clearly that isn’t service of any sort (well, maybe bad service!).

The Hemel one is alright; let me take bikes out as soon as my licence came back from the DVLA after I passed my test. I think these days the bike shortages have changed things though. I asked about taking out a norden 901 and was told theyre all sold, when I asked if they were getting a demo bike I received a curt "no".
I’m also in E Sussex, I’m assuming you went to Laguna? I’ve bought two bikes from them and that’s enough for me, absolutely useless.
Give P&H in Crawley a call, they had a SAS on demo not long ago and they’re alright to deal with.
As for the bike, they’re cracking, I’ve got a 1090 but have ridden a 17 and 21 SAS.

Honestly it’s mess up after mess up with them. Best avoided in my opinion. After by first bike from them I had a few problems but just put it down to bad luck, the second one just proved they’re useless, shame as they do have some good deals from time to time.

Just looking around at various KTM dealers and some of their reviews are horrendous , It seems to get better as you look towards the north, but what a ball ache having to depend on someone so far away and if you get real aggro with the bike your sort of screwed as your at the mercy of the southern numpties who dont really give a TOSS..After by first bike from them I had a few problems but just put it down to bad luck, the second one just proved they’re useless, shame as they do have some good deals from time to time.
P&H are usually OK - their showroom has been utterly barren the past few times I've been in there, but they nearly always have a few 1290 SAS models on the floor to sit on. I bought mine as an ex-demo from Laguna - I didn't test ride it, I just turned up paid for it and rode away. They were great to deal with and did me some cracking deals on accessories (Tech pack at half price, for example).
It's one of the best bikes I've ever ridden - I get to ride lots of nice stuff every week for my day job and the 1290 SAS is where I put my money. Just make sure you get the tech pack and I'd also recommend changing the OEM tyres at the earliest opportunity. They're not awful, but pretty much anything else will give you more confidence.

+1 for P&H - I bought my KTM from them and they were very easy to deal with. Had to travel quite a bit as not many KTM dealers by me have off road focused KTMs in their showroom. Worth giving them a ring to arrange a test ride. It's one of the best bikes I've ever ridden - I get to ride lots of nice stuff every week for my day job and the 1290 SAS is where I put my money. OP in terms of the 1290 SAS, you will love it. It is such a great and capable bike and the engine is a peach!

All I would say is have you considered the GT ? If you really need the off-road options of the S then you won't be unhappy but if you just want a road bike the GT is sharper and more fun, at least in my experience.
Can get loads in the top box too, easily enough for a w/e trip. I've fitted an exhaust hanger and done away with the rear pegs, not needed the panniers yet. I've got a small 28 litre scooter top box which I've bolted to the KTM bracket so it's lower and further forward but I agree, even a small top box can take enough for a weekend or a week away, depending on how you pack.
The GT panniers are brilliant, officially rated for up to 110mph but they seem to work fine at 150+ mph as well

At a guess KTM must have a profile of the type of person that buys the 1290. If you have a moped or have just passed your test and have a battered old 250 you are unlikely to be a reason to put a new bike on the road as a demo.
They are all probably struggling to pay the bills as it is without all that trouble.
Free cheese sample at the supermarket is a lot easier to justify even if people wolf them down then dont buy any cheese.

Topbox did get a bit wobbly at highspeed, but the KTM powerparts rack has sliders too, so the box will move a bit.The GT panniers are brilliant, officially rated for up to 110mph but they seem to work fine at 150+ mph as well

If there struggling to pay the bills maybe its down to people not being able to get a test ride ?They are all probably struggling to pay the bills as it is without all that trouble.
