Will I miss it?

Looking at changing my Street Triple R 675 for a Ducati Multistrada 950. I love the way the Triumph handles, its mostly used for weekend fun rides at the moment and always puts a grin on my face. But at 6'2", and no lightweight, the Triumph feels a bit small plus I want to be able to explore further afield (single night camping trips) and take the Mrs as pillion in more comfort more often (she's 5'9" so I suspect we look like some kind of circus act when 2 up laugh).

My worry is will I miss the fun side of the Triumph? Or will the Ducati offer enough of what the Triumph currently gives me as well as a wider range of abilities? Hopefully taking a test ride on a Multistrada V2 at the weekend which might answer the question.

Has anyone done similar - any regrets? Is there a better candidate for a replacement than the Ducati?
Total budget is around £7-8k. Space doesn't really allow for more than 1 bike.

I did a similar-ish move. Had a 675R then a 765RS. Love the street triple, and can’t rave enough about it, literally does anything you want of it, for reasonable money, and always put a smile on my face.

I sold it and bought a scrambler 1200, which is obviously a very different bike. I love the scrambler, being a big twin, I love the sound, the way you don’t have to be riding flat out to enjoy it, people always want to chat about it too.

Change is always good and the multistrada was actually one of the bikes I was looking at, but I didn’t quite need the touring capability yet. Plus the reviews are pretty good on it too. Would be tempted to go to a hypermotard next though.

Did exactly the same as you last year, had the Street Triple R but again at 6ft 1” it felt small, then my mate gave me a go on his Multistrada Pikes Peak, I part ex’d the Triple the following week for a Multistrada 1200S. It’s a phenomenal bike, does everything you need and it’s so much more comfortable than the Triple, can tour on it or just go for decent blast’s out on it with no issues, absolutely no regrets here…

In the last two years I went S1000RR, CB1000R, Multistrada 1200 PP…. My only regret is not getting one earlier. It’s fabulous for longer trips one or two up. It’s plenty of fun when wanting a quicker ride without having a riding position that encourages to ride quick to be comfortable / make the bike make sense (I struggled to use the BMW sensibly). I think it really is an excellent road bike.

I did put a taller screen on, but the buffeting was too much so it’s back on the PP / short screen.

Nah!

I did the same, traded my Yamaha FZ-09 for a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Whilst I do miss the hooligan nature of the Yamaha a little, I don't regret the change at all. I've explored so many new places I would have never taken the Yamaha, and deliberately slowed down a bit on the street.

Don't do it, I had a Multi 950, they are good but after your current bike they are quite dull, I went back to a Hyperstrada 939, well worth a look as loads of fun solo and more than capable with a pillion, I have a top box and panniers, my wife is 6ft and has no problems on the back.

If you go Multi you need a 1200 / 1260 ....

If you want more details ask away ....

Pic before I fitted top box ...

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone. It looks like it won’t be a disaster then?
To add a bit more info I’ve only been back on bikes for about 2 years after an 18 year break! The Triumph has been my only bike in this time and I have no regrets.
Heart says go for the 1200 Multistrada but head says that the 950 is the sensible choice. I’m not a ‘flat out everywhere’ type rider so I’m more confident that the 950 will be ok. I get nowhere near the Triumphs potential so losing a little from that should leave me with performance to spare?
Just need Ducati to confirm the test ride on the V2.
I will also have a look at the Hyperstrada
A 2nd bike is probably the right answer but there’s always a compromise to be made.

Cool, sounds like you have a balanced approach, one thing the Multi, and this goes for all of them, will feel quite cumbersome compared to you very nimble current bike, they get better the quicker you go, and if you are going anywhere near city centres, they aren't great, one of the reasons I reverted back to a Hyperstrada .... my journey went Hyperstrada 821 (3 years), Multi 950 (3 years) and now back on a Hyperstrada 939 for the last 12 months.

Might also be worth looking at the Honda Africa Twin .. they get great reviews and could suit your usage

Impossible to say...

I'm terrible for judging the next bike in relation to the one I last rode

IE I got off my Speed Triple onto a Street Triple - whilst it's lighter it has no torque

I then rode an MT07 (a cracking bike but needs better suspension) onto the same Street Triple - bloody hell this is just better than the MT07 everywhere, what was I thinking when I thought it needed more torque ? laugh

I'd suggest test riding alternative bikes and see what you think - easier said than done but some Dealers are far better than others in this regard

When you ride the right bike, you just know, if you are comparing good / bad points it's not the right bike

I went from a KTM 950SM which was a great hooligan bike, then moved to a MS1200 to take the missus on, it was a barge by comparison, great bike but wasn't anywhere near as sharp.

I was looking without a great deal of intention to get a Multistrada 950 after a couple of Street triple R's ,Fireblades, ZX10'S etc and ended up test riding a Hypermotard 939SP and haven't looked back, what a weapon and with a taller screen, SW motec panniers it'll do the touring bits I need too. Fantastic fun, bit lumpy in town, but not a drama and an absolute blast everywhere else. I'm 6'2", mid fifties (how did that happen) been riding for 35 years and this has re-ignited my biking, working on longer wheelies and planning trips now. Imagine the Multistrada is very capable but not quite the same!

I’ve been in a similar scenario, I’ve always loved nakeds and sports bikes, I’ve had 3 street triples alone, I really fancied something different but I was unsure, I wanted a bike that was still fun but truly could do it all, after trying lots of different bikes I’ve finally found the bike for me, a KTM 1090 adventure, it’s a V twin with 125hp so it’s got plenty of go, it handles really well, and it’ll do two up riding very well, also it’s a nice bike just to bumble about on when your not in the mood.

Have a look as it’s right in your budget, I paid £7.5k for a mint 2017 with 5k miles and lots of accessories.

Have I regretted it? Not at all! Go for it….

Hopefully I can collect before the weekend

If you fancy the Multi, the 1200 has the benefit of the DVT engine.
This allows you to ride with lower rpms around town and makes the engine a bit smoother etc.
The 950, like all non DVT's you need to keep the revs up a bit more so its not "lumpy" at slower speeds.

Yep, same reason I went a Multi 1200S DVT, it is very good at low revs around town, and if you pop it into sports mode that's another plus if you fancy something a bit more rapid...

Just a quick update.
I took out a new Multistrada V2 for the day a couple of weeks ago courtesy of local Ducati main dealer. For my riding style it offered probably 95% of the fun of the Street Triple (fully admit I dont use it to its full extent). But it does so with probably 75% more comfort, better view of the road and basically suited my use better (especially as I have also booked a ferry for next years TT with my wife as a pillion).

I have placed a deposit on a 950 with touring pack (panniers, heated grips & centre stand) which I need to get brought across to my local Ducati main dealer so its subject to inspection and test ride but hopefully all will be fine.

Looked at some of the other options suggested but all were more expensive to buy and insure and didnt offer me any more than I can reasonably use over the 950.
