I'm currently trying to trade up one of my bikes.

Haven't had much luck privately selling so decided to phone around a few dealers to get an idea of what it would be worth as a part exchange.

Of the couple who actually bothered phoning back, they both gave me pretty much the exact same (and quite decent frankly) price as an initial enquiry, but then told me their buyers had to find someone to pass the bike onto.

I just wondered, is this how part-ex is done nowadays? I appreciate i'm not trying to chop in a very desirable bike, but last time I part exchanged, they gave me a price, adjusted it for condition and that was that. I assumed if they wanted the bike it would be sold by them, or if not given a lower part ex value and then they take a punt on if they can sell it on themselves or to another dealer.

All just a 'is it just me being a dinosaur/state of the market/different times?' query really - just a little frustrated as with the values they gave me i'd have done the deals on the spot!

Dealers have dozens of "how much is my bike worth against "X"" phone calls every day, most are time wasters.

If you was in person , with your bike, in front of the dealer to evaluate, ready to place a deposit, I think you would get a more serious discussion and seal a deal.

I did a p-ex last weekend. I sent pics and description of the bike and they made me what I thought was a decent offer. Rode to the dealer, he inspected the bike and was happy with it and we completed the deal. Was very easy.

Before that another dealer said he wanted to get a price from a “buyerr” as he needed to move my bike straight on as they did not deal in Suzukis.

So maybe it depends on the dealer.

I've just trader in a tracer and only contacted dealers where j had a genuine interesting in buying a particular bike off them.
Convo mainly about the bike I'm interested in and the part ex after.

Was no hassle at all.

My bikes have always had much higher than average mileage. Generally I get offered something well off the bottom of Parker's if trading in. But it's like buying, you only get anywhere if you're quite blunt about being about to walk out and take the money away.

I hate doing business like that, turns it into a fking card game than a pleasant transaction

Which I would do, if they were not at the other ends of the country.

Both dealers who gave me a price 'in principle' I told if they got back to me as soon as I provided pictures and confirmed the price, I would do the deal there and then. As soon as they requested pics, they were sent over within 5 minutes, all good quality HD pictures. I'm not sure how much more serious I could appear.

Same. Only rang about bikes I was ready to deal on. Have the funds sitting in the bank ready. When they gave me the price, I said if that's a firm offer I'll give a deposit now over the phone.

I used to get a px price just after I had them service the bike. Never had a bad experience though it was a bigger dealer who carried a large used stock.

I swapped out my bike (PX) last month. I did 2 web queries: WeBuyAnyBike and one other (sorry cannot recall). WeBuyAnyBike were not especially good on price though. Both had web forms with your contact details and both called back within a day or two. I didn't try too hard in searching, they were top hits in google.

In the end I stayed with the dealer I was buying from who have a sister company specialising in well looked after used bikes where the PX won't sit on the forecourt (not new enough / wrong brand). Handy and the best price I was offered.

For the two PX valuations I’ve had the local dealer seemed to want a £600 markup on what he offered.

Sold my CB125R to him and he sold it for I presume £600 more asking price within a few week.

I had a quote for selling CB500F at service time and the price was £500 less than I paid him six month earlier. Unless I PX to him. I think he’d be looking to sell it for £600-700 more.

Is the dealer margin roughly this amount most places? £3750 offered Nov 2021 , bought as PX same place for £4250 2020 plate 560 ish miles May 2021 mint

Sounds like quite a low margin tbh.

My problem doesn't seem to be margin, just that the dealers seem to want to sell my bike on before they will take it in.

I've had exactly the same part ex valuation given to me by every dealer who got back to me - 4 separate dealers i think, one being marque specific, the others being multi-bike dealers, including a large Superbike Factory style outfit.

I was expecting to be given a part ex price, send some photos to prove condition if im not local enough to go for a look, agree the part ex, send a deposit, arrange collection or delivery, and enjoy my new bike.

Every time I've part exchanged in the past, this is how its gone - book price of the bike/car, adjust for mileage and condition, and then possibly a haggle on either the part ex or the cost of the new bike, and done.

I'd just use a different dealer and move on.
