I have developed a bit of a 'quirk' on my zx6r and wondered what people's online diagnosis is.....

Occasionally when shifting down to third I get a slapping noise, very similar to a false neutral as I let the clutch out.

Chain tension is good - I'm wondering if worn dogs or similar would cause this? Bike has 41k on the clock.

Anything else to consider?

Have you checked the gearchange lever and balljoints first, before you condemn the gearbox? If there's play there, you won't be fully engaging the gear on the downshift, coupled with perhaps some selector drum wear means the loose tolerances stack up.

Check chain tension at several points. Also check rear sprocket cush drives, very likely worn and causing the sprocket carrier to skap around.
Worn gearbox would have issues like jumping out of gear or difficulty changing or engaging gears.

Might be worth checking the oil?

I had a rumbling/knocking from my Monster gearbox, along with snatching when pulling away from standstill, I found this in the oil;

Hopefully yours is nothing like this but checking the oil might put your mind at rest (or not).
