Evening all, I’m looking at a 2019 GS from a very well regarded BMW main dealer, all ££’s etc agreed just need to view/ride. They called today after I enquired about next service etc to be told it’s had a brand new engine/gearbox just fitted due to excessive corrosion on the original so next service is RIS which will be FoC

1. I understand this is common on early 1250’s
2. Would it bother you, I don’t think it bothers me, but I’m writing this so maybe it does
3. It’s a premium used BMW so has a 24 month warranty
4. It had done 4000 miles and I’m assured the rest of the bike is mint, looks it in the pics
5. Feels like I’m kind of getting a new bike for a significant price reduction

If you're paying the price for a x-thousand mile bike, but with a brand new engine/gearbox, what's not to like ? I'd view it as a positive personally.

i wouldn't have a moments hesitation.

24 months BMW warranty, low mileage bike with full history and reasonable reason for replacement engine.

You'd be silly not to..

If anything it actually seems to be further discounted as they have a few months older identical bike (TE spec) with about 10k miles at £500 more

BMW are known to do this.

A dealer replacing an engine for surface corrosion isn’t unknown with a GS.

I’d treat it as a bonus.

You’re got 2 years warranty anyway. I’ve had 2 GS’s but wouldn’t touch one without a dealer warranty unless it was seriously cheap.

In my world, 4000 miles and 'new' should be pretty similar things.

How long do you expect to keep the bike?

The down side is that the bike has been pulled apart in a non-factory environment. Opinions on whether it's ever the same again may vary.
I'm sure the very best of workshops will be better than the factory, others? Who knows?

Buying a model with a known history of finish problems, I'd suggest having a plan.
Some people will move the bike on in 2 years, others will make an effort to keep it corrosion free for more years, some people might have plans to do a proper job of painting coating plating and all that.

What do you want from it? what is your exit strategy?

My bike is 20 years old and the crank cases are a bit corroded, bit of flaking paint. I spray it with stuff and keep it indoors with dehumidifier when the climate dictates. If I rebuild the engine, I'll get the cases painted nicely, meanwhile I will ride it and not worry too much.

Depends how it's been used, or if there was a fault in manufacturing

It's not the Sistine chapel! Less than 100 fasteners and a few electrical connectors, with a big manual to help along the way and 2 years warranty to back it up...

Is there anything that can be done to protect the engine paint? Ceramic coating, for example.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I was going to buy new, but I hear rumours of a new one next year so this is to tide me over, so unlikely I’ll keep it beyond the 24 month warranty, all the gods willing of course!

It’s a toy for longer rides, not commuting, so won’t be out in the wet and crud unless I get caught in a shower or it’s wet on a Euro trip.

I am very OCD about how my bikes (and car) are kept so I would spot any corrosion pretty quickly.

I am planning to coat the engine in Gyeon Q2 Rim Protector (I use it on the car wheels/callipers) it’s heat resistant to 350 deg so should work and help.

Fingers crossed it’s as good as described on Sat

Nice looking bike.

Might I suggest you fit a Mudsling and fender extender. They do help keep dirt off the engine and suspension.

I know it’s crazy having to spend money for such obvious things but that’s BMW for you.

Agree and both on the list, will look at making the hand covers a little more effective too. I’m fully aware of BMW’s tricks having had many of their cars and have one now, does make me wonder why I bother but the products are very good in my opinion and I guess they know that. The dealership was rammed today when I picked it up, but even knowing what they are like having no liners in the panniers pissed me off a bit.

FWIW, I picked up some decent inner bags for less than half the price of the OEM ones, there are a few types out there to choose from.

Which ones did you go for out of interest as lots out there and big variances in price, I’m not going OEM.

I did stump up for the connected app cradle for the phone(fits where the Sat Nav prep is) but well worth it, works very well and you can use the handlebar whizz wheel thing

I fitted a fender extender to mine, but it still wasn't very good as a mudguard, so I made a mudflap from rubber sheet and pop-riveted it to the fender extender. It kept the front of the engine pretty immaculate in 50k of all-year-round use.

It looked OK as well, I mean you're hardly going to ruin a GS's looks are you laugh
