Worrying oil leak
Discussion
Just posted this on the Ducati forum thinking it would be something trivial, then I get answers back of 2 people that it could be the gearbox casing that's cracked. Apparently the front sprocket is really close to it and stones etc get caught in the chain/sprocket and flung up, cracking the gearbox casing.
Obviously I'm worrying as I can't check further until tomorrow.
Bike is a Ducati multistrada 1200 DVT 2016
Has anyone here got any suggestions?

As above, cant diagnose this from the pictures with the cover on.
Sprocket shaft seals failing are fairly common (ive had this on my older bikes), the clutch pushroad seal can fail as well.
my brothers 1200 did crack the crankcase around this area but his chain snapped, wrapped aroound the sprocket and shattered the casing( ive also had this happen!
Both cases repaired by a skilled welder, inconvient but not game over for the cases.

Thanks Pod, that's good to hear. Sprocket shaft seals failing are fairly common (ive had this on my older bikes), the clutch pushroad seal can fail as well.

I'll get a chance to dig deeper later this morning. Hoping it's the sprocket shaft seal, as that gives me the excuse to go one tooth down on the front.
Fingers well and truly crossed

Doesn’t look like anything more than chain lube fling that’s melted a bit.
Agreed, I'm fairly sure either of my Ducatis have at least as much crud around there.If the case was cracked I would expect to see loads of oil, once you've (hopefully) established it's not you should fit a case-saver to 'divert' the chain out if it should break as that is the main cause of broken cases.
Case-saver;
Results of broken chain (without case-saver);
Also, as above could be the oil seal around the sprocket/output shaft or the pushrod (2 x 'O' rings) that's leaking?

Thank you, I'll be getting one of these.If the case was cracked I would expect to see loads of oil, once you've (hopefully) established it's not you should fit a case-saver to 'divert' the chain out if it should break as that is the main cause of broken cases.

Is the correct answer.The message on the Ducati forum about gearbox casings cracking did spook me tbh.
I've only had the bike a few months so it was the 1st time that I'd taken the sprocket cover off today. It was very, very mucky under there so no wonder it was dripping down at an alarming rate!
Wished I could of had time to whip it off last night, would have saved me a lot of worrying..
All cleaned up now and it stayed clean after a 60 mile rest ride. New oil and filter added to finish off.
Cheers all
