I cut these bikes out of 11 gauge (1/8") steel on my home-made CNC plasma table. So far I've done 11 different models. They are approximately 19" x 11" in size. Not for sale - just for fun! Several are pictured below:

Thanks for the photo of the plasma cutting table.

Those look very cool ornaments. If you were to market and sell them they would no longer be unique.

If I was capable and mercenary I'd rip off that idea.

I get a lot of questions about both. I came up with a web page that has details about the plasma table, large pictures of all the bike silhouettes, and even an on-board ride on my model railroad set-up. I hope this link is ok, since neither I, or the web page have anything for sale. Feel free to present any additional questions or comments on this forum.

Love the Matchless... My F-I-L has one...

Possibly against PH rules, although hopefully not, but is there any possibility of you selling one.? And if so, how much would it cost.? It would make an amazing birthday or Christmas present for a person that is normally impossible to buy anything for

I'm sorry, but it's too much work for the amount of money involved. While I enjoy showing these things off, the downside is that it really isn't feasible for me to make them for others. Getting one for your father in law was a nice thought, and I regret that I can't accommodate you.

These look really good, you've got a great eye for how to highlight the separate parts and details while keeping it all from a single sheet.

I had a look around your web page, as the idea of a plasma cutter in the garage is very appealing, but while you've got a lot of detail around the table, I couldn't see anything regarding the cutter itself, how you draw the parts, control the cutter and so on.

Do you have any pointers about where you got the cutting and control components and what's involved in getting it up and running?

Here is a brief explanation of how this was done. If there is sufficient interest, I'll go into more detail on my web page.

Photo 1: I locate a photo of a bike that is representative of what I plan to cut out.

Photo 2: Using a software program called CorelDraw, I trace around the significant lines in the image. Note that a distance of at least .150" (3.8 mm) must be maintained between lines and interior shapes to keep them from running together. This requires some parts and lines to be moved around slightly.

Photo 3: Finished tracing.

Photo 4: My CNC software (Flashcut CNC) automatically compensates for the gap (kerf) produced by the torch, creates lead-ins and lead-outs, and cuts interior parts and lines first. Any good CNC software should do these for you.

Photo 5: Finished part, cut and painted.

Love it!!
I dabbled in a bit of this at uni many moons ago - it seems the technology has leapt forward & is now affordable for DIY.
They look great & you should think about making a few £££: eBay(????)
Has anybody tried 3D printing something like this?

Not sure about 3D printing these, as they are two dimensional. Cutting the bikes out only takes a couple of minutes. Cleaning them up and painting them takes several of hours. Each one has about $30 worth of steel in it. All told, considering time, materials, and consumables, selling them isn't really feasible for me. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
