I’ve been looking at insurance quotes for my GS.

It hasn’t got an alarm or tracker so I thought I’d add on a disc lock in the online quote (as in their drop down menu on physical security)

That’s okay if your bikes in the garage or in a car park but I’m a bit concerned that if you park up for a bit, a mates house, a coffee shop etc and you don’t put the disc lock on every single time your in a world of pain if the bike is nicked.

Is this liable to happen? I’ve got a feeling it is.

Anyone ever had experience of this?

If so I’m going to get a quote without and consider my options.

I’m still going to buy and use a disc lock but I don’t want to be obligated to putting it on every time.

When I first got my MV new the insurance requirement for it to always have extra security on when away from home. At home it was chained to the floor. When out I had to use a disc lock. In the insurance small print it said if it was stolen away from home and I didn't have the additional security on, the payout was reduced 20%, so check the small print of the policy.

Now the bike is 6 years old and worth 1/2 as much insurers dont insist on the disc lock. I just insure all my bikes with their factory fitted security only, but do use chain/ground anchor at home and a disc lock if left out of sight when away from home.

I try wherever possible to declare no security as I don’t want to fall foul of someone just throwing the bike in the back of a Transit if I was to nip to the loo (I always pick my bike even when fuelling up - however a disc lock won’t stop it being simply chucked in a van).

If it got stolen with a disc lock on what are the chances of you seeing it again? Same as they are if it was stolen without. Who knows if it was on.

As an aside I do declare my 19mm Protector chain and ground anchor used at home in the garage - however the insurers did clarify that they only expected this to be used at home - you cannot reasonably be expected to lug a 20kg lock and chain around.

I wouldn't specify a disc lock otherwise you'll (presumably) always have to fit it which could be a PITA for short stops etc. Same for alarms etc. unless it is an actual requirement.

You can bet your life if it got stolen without it fitted the insurance company would shaft you.

Like the 'Garaged when at home' clause, my Insurance used to state that, if stolen from home whilst not in the locked garage then the excess would be doubled which is fair enough given that a (slight) discount was offered for using the garage but, recently they say no payout if it happens.

Doesn't stop them trying to add a couple of hundred pounds every year to the renewal though...

Personally I lock mine every time I leave it - it takes about 10 seconds hardly a problem

I use an alarmed disc lock for coffee type stops - because I don't want it stolen, my insurers didn't even ask about security

Markerstudy have the no payout when not locked in the garage clause, my new insurer just has a higher excess. Makes cleaning or working in the garden less risky.

I don't declare my disclock or my at home chain for the very few times I don't use them.

Same here - even if paying for fuel I lock it. I’ve had all my bikes stolen in one hit before: never again!

It’s not an insurance requirement - it’s common sense.

Really ?

I assume that if I'm 20m away either I can stop / deter them or nothing will

Ie a lone thief won't try it on and a gang won't care about you or the lock

Physical security is a condition of my bike insurance, though there is no specification about exactly what that is. I use a cheapish gold rated disc lock to meet the condition, but am under no illusion about its effectiveness.

It takes about 10s to lock/unlock it. I do it every time so it's always part of the process, and hopefully reduces the chance of me forgetting it's on.

I lock my bike as in putting the steering lock on, but I dont fit the alarmed disc lock unless im leaving it somewhere at an event or shops. not that it would do much good to a professional gang who just turn up and put it in the back of a van within a minute.

I did not declare any additional security. Same as others above; I’m not interested in locking it every single time I leave it somewhere. Also I checked and it didn’t make any price difference to the insurance. London.

When at home my bike has an cheapish alarmed disc lock and 12mm chain fitted even when in the garage. Told the insurance this and now guess that's part of my conditions if it is stolen. I'm not going to gamble and suddenly find out, if its nicked, that it must be.

When I'm out and about I've fitted an aftermarket alarm and use a quality disc lock, can't realistically be expected to carry the chain around. Only use the lock when I'm somewhere it will be out of sight, otherwise just the alarm and steering lock.

Insurers are only your friend when it comes to getting your premium, beyond that, they will avoid paying given half a chance. I have a decent disc lock and use it at home and when leaving the bike for more than a few minutes. Never declared to an insurer as I want to retain the option to decide when I use it. The discount was £7 and I was happy to keep the convenience.

Same here. I don’t declare anything outside the garage, but I do always use at least an alarmed Abus disc lock when I’m out and about. I pay relatively peanuts to insure a latest model R1 and I’d like my premiums to stay that way. It only takes a couple of seconds to lock it.

(Remember that if your bike gets stolen all your bike and car insurance will go up, plus any other bike and car policies that you’re insured on (eg the wife’s) which can get nasty if you’ve got multiple policies. All for a couple of seconds inconvenience. )

Just insured through Be Moto at a very good price.

I decided not to specify a disc lock, did it over the phone which gave the guy a chance to compare and it didn’t make a bit of difference to the quote.

Nice to have the option. My choices seem to be additional security all the time or no (sensibly priced) insurance.
