I want to store some bikes fairly securely

My initial thought was a 20 foot shipping container but they are now £3k delivered for a used one and are awkward to get where you want and impossible to move once they're in place

I bought a bike at the weekend and he had a "flat pack" steel container which I was unaware existed but googling shows there's a huge variety - although most don't have prices on display

Has anyone used them or got any recommendations / things to be aware of ?

Ideally I'd like to get at least four bikes in one

I've known cars and bikes suffer pretty badly from long term storage in shipping containers.

Vast fluctuations of temperatures and poor ventilation creating problems with condensation leading to corrosion and mouldy trim.

I'm sure it can be mitigated, but something to consider.

Have a look at these https://www.asgardsss.co.uk/motorcycle-storage we have a push bike storage from them and have been very impressed with it. Specifically designed for the use intended and well made. Not cheap but then no good secure solution will ever be cheap.

My brother's got a really high security metal shed, which is effectively flat pack. We put it together after he'd moved recently and it was pretty straighforward.

It houses three (old) bikes, but as it's metal it does tend to gather condensation when compared to a wooden one and gets ferociously hot inside. We assembled it in the middle of summer... Personally, I'd get a wooden one then make some kind of frame within the doorway to slow down any potential thieves. Looking at the prices of the metal ones, you'd have a fair bit of budget left to make (or have made) some kind of security gate.

Wooden sheds looks miles nicer, they're easier to move and more flexible if you want to ever use for other things. Plus they let bikes 'breathe'.

I've got a 'secure-a-bike shed and it's very secure but only fits one bike. My other shed is an 'armadillo box'. These can be bought in various sizes. It wasn't cheap, but it is good quality.

Rather than get a bike specific container just go for a standard flat pack container. It gives you much better flexibility in size.

Something like this https://www.shippingcontainersuk.com/brands/expand...

I know someone who had a container like this (although maybe not that make) and it’s a really strong secure unit.

Excellent sheds. We have one at work and a mate has one to house his bike.

Good recommendation... Thanks.

I've been looking for bike storage as my garage is full. N+1 and all that.

I had a 20’ ft shipping container and armadillo bike box at the last house, left the shipping container (for obvious reasons!) and dismantled the Armadillo and reassembled at the new house.
If you can’t fit a 20 ft container and had room I’d go for a 10’ container, for the best security, saying that the Armadillo can be tucked away out of sight from prying eyes which probably contributes to its effectiveness.

No direct experience but I work with a few local builders that use the flat pack containers for secure storage of their tools etc when building extensions for customers.

I couldn’t name the make but quality looked very good and I watched them dismantle one between two of them last year to load on their truck to take to the next site. It all looked very easy and well designed.

Edit: it was one of these

These are the ones that I was drawn to

Personally I prefer the green (many are just galv) and I like the design

The Asguard flat panels look horrible to me (and are more expensive)

All the POA makes it a lot harder than it should be

With regard to the condensation problem, I've had a flat pack container for 3 years, managed to carry each of the panels in to the back garden with 2 mates to help. It's 3m long and 2.2m wide. Never had any condensation in it. www.kovobel.uk

I do remember the floor was a bit of a lump, but the other panels were easy to lift. It's strong and stiff and I got an extra bar to beef up the security. It's only got a few bits of Honda Civic in it and a few creates of beer!! It is galv, so not great it you want green, unless you camo net it!! Good luck.
