Closure of Old Jewry Bike Parking Bay - City of London
Discussion
I saw the below sign (pic at bottom of post) for the closure of this bay on Old Jewry in the City. I now understand that the bay is being closed due to some technical issues with changing access, however, the City have not proposed an alternative at this time.
When people rely on this space to get in and avoid densely packed transport, this just seems lazy / like a real mistake.
In my experience the remaining City parking bays are very well used / a lifeline for bikers of all sorts.
The City seems to have had no issues putting in additional cycling bays in road parking space and even electric scooter bays (no licence, no road tax, no registration, safety record??) - so the space does exist and the provision of motorcycle parking bays cost them effectively nothing.
I am writing to complain, but if anyone commutes into the City and feels motivated to send some correspondence (could be based upon the above lines), it would be great for them to get more than one response. I assume that general public apathy is an issue here.
I just realised that the deadline is tomorrow Dec 17th (I assume any time before midnight).
The given email address for responses is:

Update :
Got an email response today, including a pdf letter from the case officer at the DoE. Seems quite a few people must have objected as they are now examining a proposal to convert an existing vehicle pay/display space in Old Jewry into a motorcycle bay.
It's not a win yet, but it does seem that the planners are now looking for an alternative location for the bay.

Hi
A big thank you to those who responded on this. Was also pleased to see the news.
Clearly not finalised yet, but a step in the right direction.
Whilst one bike parking bay may not seem that material to some people, free bike parking bays in the City and particularly close to Bank are a rare and precious asset - and vital for people trying to get in and out.
I also see this as part of a bigger battle to get recognition for PTW riders in London, when the prevailing groupthink from TFL is really just about walking and cycling and making everything else as difficult as possible - and the need for council planners to think around this.
I have been working with some people from Motorcycle Action Group London who have been brilliant in their support and ideas.
Fingers crossed...

I believe that they are doing a further consultation on whether to convert an existing car parking bay in Old Jewry to a bike parking bay - this is after various bikers wrote in last time.
However, the existing bay remains closed whilst they do this.
It would be great if there could be further support / responses on this.
I can't quickly find a link for the consultation - will double check and come back.
The nuts thing about this is that the original bike parking bay (closer to the junction of Old Jewry and Gresham St) got moved back given some minor / limited real impact pedestrian motivated change was made nearer the junction. They then consulted / moved the bay further back - with Bank of China then complaining that this impacted their access (trucks turning in) - however, they hadnt responded before.
The City's plan was then just to erase the bike bay...!
We got this far due to the responses made - please do support to get the new bike bay across the line. Again, will come back with details of the consultation / email address to respond to.

Update from the City of London this morning.
Will update when the Consultation goes live - it would be great to get as many supportive comments as possible:
"Thank you for your email regarding the status of motorcycle bay on Old Jewry.
There will be a public consultation for this proposal and I anticipate this will commence in mid May 2022 when a statutory Notice is due to be published in the local press and attached to a lamp column on Old Jewry in the vicinity of the proposed bay. The general public will then have the opportunity to submit any views or comments they have for a period of up to 21 days from the date of the statutory Notice, and these will be given due consideration when a final decision is made."
You will never know but there’s probably someone involved who doesn’t like bikes or want them parking or whatever, so they may just want to get rid of the space. Rather than do the blindingly obvious and if they need to lose it, simply reallocate a car space. But that’s gonna be too complex for their tiny minds
Maybe its madness and it would be great if they just implemented - but this is what we have to deal with.
They moved the bay once and then had complaints from the Bank of China that the new position was blocking trucks turning into their rear access.
So they are trying to ensure that it works for the majority of constituents before implementing.
