What's the general consensus on this? Considering something for my VFR1200F. I'm not worried about drilling the fairings but I've read horror stories about bobbins distorting the frames. Engine cases are twice as expensive but then they do offer a fair degree of protection.

They do still protect them in high speed high sides though.

But you're right. You do end up with bigger things to worry about in those situations.

For the cost of them though, and assuming they don't look completely gash on the bike I'd still fit them. They save scratches and gouges in the cases after silly little spills or knocking the bike with the lawnmower / spade etc ... when getting them out of the garage.

My last R1 had R&G frame protectors and Gilles axle protectors on it when my mate chucked it at the floor. The engine cover picked up a slight chuff and the fairings were trashed by the mirror snapping off and ripping all the mounts out with it but crucially the frame escaped with only a very small mark from the gear lever, without the protectors his £1k bill easily have been double or triple. In a big smash they won't do a lot of good but in a low speed or stationary drop they can save a fortune. My S1000RR has frame sliders and axle protectors (Evotech) and I'll probably fit engine covers too at some point, just to be on the safe side.
