I’m just after some opinions on the best budget pit bike. I’m buying one for my 12 year old sons Christmas present. I haven’t been in the loop for a few years and after a bit of research the Chinese stuff seems to have improved.
My budget is up to £1000, I think this is more than enough to see if he gets the bug then I will buy him something better.
Any advice welcome 👍

Have you looked at a 2nd hand proper mx bike? You could get a big wheel 65 KTM or husky for that, or a crf125 for not much more, probably make money on the Honda too!
Assuming you are going to let him ride it legally at my tracks and practice days etc, (excellent value days out) maybe go have a look at such a place and see what the kids same age are riding.

How big is your lad. At 12 he maybe 4ft or 5ft 8!

He’s 5ft, will be riding legally in a private field but will look at tracks when he’s learned how to ride.
We’re in near Leeds so haven’t looked in to local tracks yet

What about a trials bike - like an oset? 24R for example.

Much lower chance of spending the night in A&E with your kids, and arguably more fun as they'll jump as well as pit bike, but can be proper laugh on enduro style trails.

Symoto from pitbikeparts.

Great people to deal with and when you need spares/consumables you'll be sure you're getting a compatible replacement.

Mate, if he’s that size, I’d get him something like a road based trail bike first to learn on even a n MT5 or something like that. That way, yiu can insure it for yourself, (good if it gets nicked) and it will be a proper size with decent size wheels for him to learn on, without stupid amounts of power and resulting death!
Once he’s mastered things and used to gears etc yiu can tune it, or get him a 125.

The road bikes are a good call for insurance, slightly softer power delivery and you’ll make money on it if it’s a 2 stroke especially.
DT 125 were a grand a few years back, near 3 grand now.
I got my daughter an mt5 when she was 10 and she still rides it now at 14. It’s got a 70 barrel and head on it, and makes about 18hp! Proper laugh on drum brakes!
